Artist and CD Review: Money Man Money Plan

For the group Money Man Money Plan it’s all about raw honesty, the love of money, and the rhymes that back up who they are and what they’re all about. Now, these guys aren’t into your average beats, or one album filled with songs that all sound the same. Instead, they talk about who they are, how they view the world, and what it is they want. If anything, what most people will find is that not only do the members of Money Man Money Plan know what they want, but they do it with their own style and they don’t and won’t apologize about it.

As previously mentioned you get an album with Money Man Money Plan that brings beats and rhymes that the D has been in dyer need of. Although, the central focus is about money, I urge listeners to look and take each song a step further with Money Man Money Plan. Each individual song tells its own unique story and the picture it paints is crystal clear for any listener to clearly understand. Furthermore, you can take away music that you feel on all levels, and music that you can identify with at different times of your day.

Thus, the reality is this; enough with the hype, and enough with the talk. Instead, just listen, and check out the CD “On the Rise Chapter 1,” from the D’s proud rap group Money Man Money Plan. It’s about time we brought the dollar, the grind, and the truth about Detroit back to Detroit, and that’s exactly what these artists are doing.

Back in the spotlight where their talent belongs

They don’t need an introduction, or hype of any kind, so let’s get right into with the band Cody Stagefright. They were featured last year at the Relay for Life Event in Roseville, Michigan, and beyond that they’ve made a strong impact wherever they’ve been. Still, for these guys, it’s about giving back, showing off their talent, and doing it all while looking fashionable, fly, and making sure everyone has a good time. “We have been in the studio working on our next two EP's, one of them titled Pink Iguana (coming soon), and we have also been writing some of the most amazing new material EVER!,” said lead singer Jim Woolsey who then went on to talk about an upcoming event that will take place on Friday, January 22.

“We will be playing an event at the Hayloft in Mt. Clemens, for the sign my band competition, with a 10K prize, and much more, we hope everyone can come out to help us win,” said Woolsey who along with the band is in the works of creating a rock n roll hair ball charity.

Yet, aside from live shows, and events, what has been the inspiration these days for Cody Stagefright? “My inspiration for lyrics has always derived from the groove of the music itself but I have gained inspiration for a few songs with the recent loss of my mother Gail Woolsey due to cancer in late August,” said Woolsey. From here band member Volcano continued on. “Seeing that there are more people paying attention, due to how good songs were, the bar has been raised, and for me my mind keeps saying good job, beat that,” said Volcano.

Thus, with inspiration comes authenticity, and for Cody Stagefright, they know what they have as a band that sets them apart from the rest. “We bring a sense of playfulness and return to exploration of the soul of music,” said Woolsey. With the said, who is next up on the list for collaboration with Cody Stagefright? “We have been trying to contact Jay Z, Little Wayne, Kanye, and 50 Cent, but we for some reason haven’t had any replies,” said Woolsey. He then continued on. “We are going to be doing something with Skinny Jimmy, who will be doing some remixes with our new and old songs,” said Woolsey.

From here all I can say is make sure and I mean absolutely make sure that you keep up with these guys at codystagefright.com. Also, remember to enjoy the sound, the playfulness, and remember that these guys don’t bite, so feel free to approach them at any show with any thoughts, comments, or questions. Remember, for Cody Stagefright, it’s all about the experience of enjoying real talent, with real musicians who are only looking to bring it, and bring it with a good time had for everyone.

She Holds Water; a treat for your ears

Often times, you can be going through channel after channel on the radio, and still you don’t seem to find exactly what you’re looking for. Let’s face it, the same thing can happen with your iPod, CD, or if you’re really old school, your cassette tape collection. Well regardless, if you’re looking for that sound you need, with a style that’s uniquely original and full of talent, then you should check out She Holds Water. You should also check out and enjoy this interview that I conducted with the one and in some cases the only member of She Holds Water, Thomas Stephen Halpin.

“My original intention was to put out an album while learning as much as I could about what technology/techniques were being used to create music,” said Halpin who helped his own musical art grow by learning as much as he could from other musicians. “Technically, I am the only member, but there are plenty of musicians of whom I would perform with, and a ton more who have played in some pieces that I’ve recorded,” said Halpin when asked about how many members are in the group. He then continued on. “The cool part is when you play with different musicians who have different influences, because that way the song won’t sound the same twice,” said Halpin.

Halpin, then went on to talk a little bit about his influences. “My first love was a poppy rock band called Jimmy Eat World, but as of late, heavy influences have been Copeland, Lydia, Brand New, and Thrice,” said Halpin. Although when it comes to She Holds Water it’s hard to find Halpin’s work offline, but you can find Halpin and his musical talents on CD Baby, MySpace, and the new album will be released on iTunes on January 9, of this up coming year.

In regards to the current state of affairs with music, Halpin shared his thoughts on how to listen better and enjoy a wider range of music. “If you want good music to thrive, the entire music industry has to thrive, and that means it’s a good idea to turn off the radio and it’s influence for a while,” said Halpin who when it came to Detroit, he wishes that the scene wasn’t so dominated by ticket-presales to play shows.

As for his own music, Halpin has his own category for it. “I’m moving towards more of a Rock with a pop/electronic influence, but that’s just today though, it could be different by tomorrow,” said Halpin. That’s exactly what Thomas Stephen Halpin, and She Holds Water, is all about variety, and a never ending goal of expanding the listening quality. Thus, you should be sure to check out Thomas Stephen Halpin, and She Holds Water for true musical freedom, expression, and overall enjoyment.

Youthful rap artists that will leave you begging for more

Many times in the hip-hop industry, the younger artists run into many stereotypes, preconceived notions, and judgments based on their age. There is often times jealousy from other artists, and in many cases it’s a one shot deal for these young artists, who if they don’t make a big impression from the get go, they can find themselves next’ed in a heartbeat. Yet, none of these issues will become problematic for the talented Detroit based artists who represent their lives, style, and sound through their group Jaw Droppin’ Entertainment. It was during this interview, where the group and their manager Thomas Jaster, talked about the music, the industry, and where they fit in with it all.

“Our identity is centered on droppin’ jaws, and our lyrics, metaphors, and the way the group performs on stage is unlike anything you’ve ever heard from such young men,” said Jaster who went on to say that Jaw Droppin’ is more than just a name for a label, it’s also a concept for how these young men base their lyrics, music, and swagger. “With Jaw Droppin’ you think out of the ordinary or out of the box, it’s not your typical everyday hip-hop,” said Jaster. Yet, as a group of three young men, the question still remains; how does the art come to life? Who creates what, from the lyrics to the beats, and everything else in between? “It’s a combination of collaborations as well as individual work,” said Jaster who knows that within the group each artist has their own individuality, yet they bring it all together to make bangin tracks.

To further that point, each member of Jaw Droppin’ Entertainment reflects their individuality and style with what they bring to the table. “YC is smooth, the slow jam R&B style artist, although he can come hard and full of energy, and Persia Grai is cocky and can come hard, almost angry like, and he is also probably the most musically talented messing around with different instruments and sounds, and J-Flow has unending energy and creativity,” said Jaster who knows that all the artists are so versatile and competitive, and that makes for a better product at the end.

Thus, with that much talent, creativity, and uniqueness, comes a lot of creativity. “The biggest inspiration is real life, both good and bad,” said Jaster. Persia Grai also shared his input. “I come off cocky, when I’m in a cocky mood, but I don’t write about something with a cocky attitude, unless something happened to give me that cocky attitude,” said Grai.

Lastly, there is the aspect of managing a group this young. For this Jaster was glad to share his input. “Learn patience, understanding, and how to allow individuals to be themselves, and get involved with your artists on a deeper, more personal level, in order to build their trust,” said Jaster who loves the quote “people will not care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” Therefore, if you care to check out these amazingly talented artists, who truly do the D proud, you should go to: www.jawdroppinent.com or you can go to their MySpace page: www.myspace.com/jawdropppinent
You can also check them out all over the D, and at many great venues in Macomb County.

Still, if you chose to see these young artists perform live, all I can say is that you should be ready. Be ready for entertainment that truly lives up to its name, and be ready for something that is not only out of the ordinary, but it actually works for a more universal audience.
That’s exactly what you’ll get with the artists, the individuals, and the members of Jaw Droppin' Entertainment.

                                  Artist Review: Lil Cease

As a member of the Junior Mafia, Lil Cease would open up, and collaborate on many hot tracks. Yet, even though it was knocked down, and it often times goes unnoticed, Lil Cease managed to put together some hot tracks for his first record. The CD itself was titled: The Wonderful World of Cease a Leo and although it didn’t rank that well, one would have to argue that it should of on the basis of lyrical creativity, raw honesty, and Cease’s ability to paint a picture in every song. Thus, let’s dive further into the artist who should have been given another chance; the artist known as Lil Cease.

For Lil Cease his album The Wonderful World of Cease a Leo should have been given much better reviews, from a sheer lyrical content perspective. Cease was given his chance to shine through this album, and in some areas he may have fallen short. However, one thing that Cease was able to do was let his true personality come out and shine through his lyrics and beats.

Yet, many of you could be wondering: what about now? What has Cease done lately? Well, if you’re like me, than you’re hoping that rapper Lil Cease even in the midst of his beefs with former friends, will come out with another album. Regardless if he does or doesn’t, I’d highly recommend that reviewers and fans alike give Cease and his album The Wonderful World of Cease a Leo another chance. If you do that, than hopefully like me, you’ll be pleasantly surprised, and you’ll be looking forward to more to come from this talented east coast rapper.

                                         Artist Review: MoeNitty

It’s safe to say that if you’re a rap artist in the greater Detroit area that you have definitely heard of MoeNitty. Still, this isn’t going to be about MoeNitty’s work as a promoter, but instead, it’s about MoeNitty the rap artist. A rap artist who is doing more than breaking through, but instead he’s paving the way for the future rap and hip-hop scene here in the D.

To avoid scattering from album to album, and song to song, let’s focus on the story of MoeNitty and who he is told through his album Rated M: Chronicles of a Scorpio. From the first interview I conducted with MoeNitty, I learned that Moe raps about sex, love, and everything else in that world. With that said, it would only be fitting to begin by focusing on his very popular and widely known hit from the Rated M album, titled: “Better than Yo Baby Daddy.” With that song, MoeNitty has treated many fans and artists alike to a song that many would consider one of the greatest sex raps of all time. Yet, what makes it so great is not the raunchy lyrics, or the attempt to put on a players façade. What makes it such a hot song is that Moe delivers the track with class, and a beat that isn’t trying to be in your face, over the top, or phony. When MoeNitty raps about his experiences and wisdom with the track “Better than Yo Baby Daddy,” it’s about being honest, and it’s told with a laid back beat that shows male artists everywhere that the best expression of sex is told by being genuine and truthful.

Furthermore, MoeNitty also discusses other topics on his Rated M album that speaks to the point of who he is as a person and as an artist. The point I’m referring to is truth. Also, with vocals, a presence, and an ability to captivate an audience in the same way that 2Pac once did, people should get ready for this Detroit based rapper to not only take off, but to also bring back the hope, promise, and truth that our great city and the rap game needs.

Rapper A.K. in his words and in his world

That’s right we’ve got another real talent coming out of the D. This time it is rapper A.K. who is ready to bring his honest opinion and his art to the forefront. Thus, with a sound, lyrical mix, and beats that are undeniably his own, rapper A.K. is in it for more than just himself, he’s in it to win it big for the D. “I’m not just another hood rapper/wanna be dope boy, I’m a creative performer and versatile artist, who’s not afraid to make universal music for all people,” said A.K. when asked about the central theme of his music. From there he shared his influences. “I’m inspired by what I see, what I’ve been through, and how I feel,” said A.K. who hopes to become a world-wide name in rap, and go much further than the hood.

With that said, A.K. then explained how his creativity flows as an artist, both with beats and lyrics. “Creating good beats is harder than creating good lyrics, because once the beats are created the lyrics usually flow, especially, if it’s real talk,” said A.K. This would then pose the question about putting his art out there. How hard is that to not only create the music, but promote it as well? “Producing the music is easy with the current technology, but promoting is a reflection of your passion and budget, because it’s a struggle to stay in the public eye,” said A.K. who said it’s hard to get on the radio as a local artist.

Well, one place that is not hard to find A.K. is online. He has a MySpace page; myspace.com/akfromdetroit, a music video; youtube.com/yoboyak47, and you can also check out his music at arisrecords.com. You can also get at A.K. in the A.K. van, where you can get a CD.

So, if you’re ready to listen to an artist who seeks to inspire, uplift, and help you identify with your real life experiences, than you should definitely check out rapper A.K. He’s not in it for the wrong reasons, neither are his fans, and you’ll know truth in life when you hear it, you’ll know cause you’re listening to rapper A.K.

JIGSAW; millions of pieces in one artist

If rap is about taking care of business, making things happen, and doing it all while kicking out some tight beats, great rhymes, and the kind of music that just makes you want to party, than you should listen to rapper JIGSAW. Coming straight out of Detroit, JIGSAW is all about business, and of course pleasure; pleasure for his fans. Here, he shares it all; his thoughts, his wisdom, and his philosophy, all in his words.

“I’m like a million pieces, you’ll never figure me out,” said JIGSAW who went to say that it’s strictly biznezz or no biznezz at all. That of course is a reflection of his music, and album titles. Still, JIGSAW had more to say about music in general, and what he hopes to gain and get from being an artist. “I want to become an icon in the game, and help the up and coming artists,” said JIGSAW. He then continued on with his music and how hard it is to create it.

“It’s very hard, you always have to change things up, and hope that it works for you this time around,” said JIGSAW who described his biggest influence as music, because it is constantly around him and within him. Thus, the question remained; do people put certain expectations on rappers that they don’t put on other artists from other types of music? “No, I mean, people listen to what they feel, i.e. some like dance music, whereas others like dance,” said JIGSAW.

Well, if you want to feel, or check out JIGSAW, you’ve got plenty of options. “People can catch me at the RITZ, TNT, or any other hot spot in the D, and you can also here my music on ITUNES, FYE.COM or TARGET.COM,” said JIGSAW, who went to end the interview with a message of hope for artists in Detroit. “We need unity in Detroit, because there ain’t anyone better than the rest around here, because we’re all in the same pot,” said JIGSAW.

Thus, with unity on his mind for Detroit artists, and with the skills and talents needed to take things to the next level, rapper JIGSAW isn’t just in it for himself. He’s in it for Detroit, for the individual, for the game, and for those who just want to have a good time.

The Skills and the artist the game needs

Have you ever felt that the rap world needs to turn it up a little bit? Not so much from a volume perspective, but what about the independent variety? What about an artist who is willing to lay it all down for you as honestly as he can about the game, the style, and the sound? If this is the kind of artist that you are looking for, than look no further, and enjoy the story of the rapper Influence.

His first thoughts were about collaborations. “When I collaborate with other artists it’s like putting on a new suit, his or hers might look better than yours so you have to make sure you dress nice,” said Influence who would continue on by identifying the stereotypes that rappers are associated with. “All people think is that we degrade women, we sell drugs, and we’re associated with violence,” said Influence.

Yet when it comes to what this man’s influences have been, it was interesting to gain a perspective that is often times forgotten about in the rap world. “Honestly, it has to be the stress of life, I’ve been through a lot, and I’ve lost a lot, and let’s face it, nobody enjoys having a meltdown,” said Influence who through rap was able to find his outlet. Still, when it comes to creating his art, rapper Influence goes through both the ups and the downs of being an artist. “Usually when I hear the beat in my head and the lyrics soon follow, or vice-versa, but the worst is when I get writers block, because that can last for months,” said Influence.

Yet, even while dealing with all of that, rapper Influence knows his and really the true meaning of success when it comes to his art. “If I know that I’ve helped people cope with whatever life throws at them, either good or bad, than I’m doing the best job I truly can,” said Influence who also hopes to touch a wide variety of audiences, with collaborations with genre’s such as Classical and Jazz.

As far as his performances, and music, there will be plenty more to come with this intellectual, insightful, and talented artist. “I do have hard copies of my music, and my MySpace page will be up and running shortly, and you can link to my music from there,” said Influence. Also, keep it locked here, as Influence and his story will continue, which will be a true benefit, enjoyment, and for many, an inspiration.

Don P; He will be heard

When it comes to making himself heard, spitting out tremendous lyrical content, and incorporating creativity with quickness, rapper Don P doesn’t just have you covered, but he may incorporate you into his rhymes. With high hopes of transitioning the focus back on to Detroit rap, Don P shows no signs of slowing down as he seeks to gain momentum towards the top. It is here that he shared his words, his wisdom, and how he does it all with his crew behind him all the way.

Don P knows the important influences in his life that have helped him become the artist and person he is today. “My biggest influence has to be my Grandpa who came over here from Cuba and pursued his dream of becoming a doctor, and he helped those in South East Detroit who had little or no money,” said Don P who through his Grandfathers’ legacy learned what it meant never give up in the pursuit of your happiness and dreams. From there, he would go on to share his spiritual feelings about his beliefs and about the City of Detroit.

“Without God, none of this would be possible, and with Detroit, I can’t explain it but there is just a feeling I get that is unexplainable, because just being from Detroit is enough to inspire me,” said Don P. He would then continue on with his feelings about what the true meaning of rap is. “Everyone in the game is losing sight of what rap is all about, and that’s true self expression, and I’m not a flashy person,” said Don P, whose appeal comes from the fact that he is just an average dude doing his thing.

“Success to me is to be able to do what I love for a living, support my family, and give back to all those who have helped me and who have and still do believe in me,” said Don P who also has hopes of becoming one of the best MC’s in the game. Now, the list goes on of the places you can see Don P do his thing in the D, and all over. Some of those places include; St. Andrews, The Ritz Sound Stage, Simons bar, and more. Don P also records his rhymes in Oak Park at the Star Factory. He’s also online at: http://www.myspace.com/donp2121

So, when anyone wants to do anything from a music standpoint, rap or otherwise, it’s important that they remember to bring something. They need to remember to bring themselves, their life, and their experiences, and speak with their voice. That’s what Don P seeks to do in every rhyme, and that’s all anyone can and should ask of this up and coming rap artist.

Making his mark through honesty and expression

For rapper Big Not, his main goal is not only to create consistently well thought out content, but he puts himself in the shoes of the fans when it comes to his music. Big Not is all about setting the bar high and bringing the kind of rap to the stage that some of us have long forgotten about. Yet, at the same time when it comes to Big Not, it’s not only about bringing something back, but it’s also about creating something new that is consistently being reinvented. Big Not shared his thoughts with me about all of this and more.

“I try to put out music that I would buy, and I try to set a high bar for my music and I want to make ring tone music unacceptable so the rappers have to bring better music to the table or quit,” said Big Not. “The digital studio era is one of the biggest problems with mainstream rap right now, because now anyone with a computer can record, and it’s the suits at the distribution companies who want to push these ringtone artists,” said Big Not who wants every album he does to leave its own mark, as he constantly keeps thinking outside of the box when it comes to his writing.

“I am not worried about a person’s opinion as far as my music goes, because either they will like it or they will not and when a rapper caters to everyone’s opinion you end up with repetitive music,” said Big Not. Still, what about the issues with image when it comes to rap and how does that fit into an artist being successful? “People already take me seriously, so no, I do not need an image, but the best image a rapper can have if they don’t have one, is to be an artist who keeps it real,” said Big Not who has the goal of being the best rapper ever and he wants his legacy to be what proves that.

Speaking of legacy, Big Not has some major influences on his art that keep him inspired and motivated. “The chronic album influenced me because at that time the sound from the album was unlike anything I had ever heard before, and after I heard that album I knew I wanted to pursue music,” said Big Not who was also influenced by his life experiences and by 2Pac. Aside from his own influences Big Not wants to influence fans and other artists through his lyrics and sound.

He wants to do that through his records performances, and he performs at many different venues and in many different places. In fact, on Friday night October 23, Big Not will be at the Screaming Eagle in Ypsilanti, with his main Man Scottie Mac of the Independent Music Movement. You can also see more of Big Not on the web at; http://www.myspace.com/lyricallychrist, where he is currently in the process of updating new music from his new Mix Tape.

It’s time for the change to be made in the rap game, and for many it can’t come soon enough. Thus, it is more than fitting, and more than appropriate that an artist like Big Not take a stand and be a leader in the fight for better lyrical content, sound, and just better rap music. With an already respectable name, and a truth to his craft, rapper Big Not shows no sign of slowing down, and that means great things for the game.

JP from the HP; His words, his world

For artists know a days in the rap game, it’s anything but easy to put it all together, and make a successful run with your art. So much has to go into representing who you are, and what message you want to get across, and how to promote it right and make it happen. Well, one artist who is definitely putting it down with his own style, sound, and authentic lyrical content is JP from the HP. He shared his thoughts and opinions with me about people and the rap game in general.

“I think anybody has the right to rap, if they are dope enough,” said JP who also believes that people shouldn’t rap about things that aren’t relevant to who they are and where they came from. “I personally don’t like hearing people who have been rich all their lives rap about gangsta shit, cause that wasn’t around them when they grew up,” said JP. Yet, aside from the message, what are the flaws in today’s rappers? What are some common mistakes rappers make in trying to make it in the rap game?

“The thirst for instant gratification is a big downfall for up and coming rappers, because just because you don’t have million people hitting you up, telling you how good you are every second, doesn’t mean that your music isn’t special and/or powerful,” said JP. He would then continue on. “Not everyone is going to praise you, but someone could be singing your song, or be affected or influenced by it,” said JP.

For JP from the HP (Hazel Park), he understands that through writing good content and using the right beats, good material can be produced. This is especially true if you get the chance to see him perform live or if you check out his MySpace page; http://www.myspace.com/jpfromthehp which features such real tracks as; “Back at My Moms,” and “Sucka Free.”

With JP from the HP, you can listen to lyrics that are in many ways universally identifiable, and at the same time they have the beats to go with it. So make sure you check out this man, coming up from the HP, and doing it all his way with his own style and sound.

Bring her home for the holidays

There are countless artists who have tried, and will always try to make great holiday music. Some have been successful, but honestly none truly have the sound and voice like Aimee Mann. With songs that are timeless classics and a look to match, Mann manages to bring something special home for the holidays. The album itself titled: One More Drifter in the Snow features such classic Christmas songs as: “I’ll be home for Christmas”, “Winter Wonderland”, and my personal favorite “You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch.”

The most amazing thing about Mann is that she has this talent as well as ability to bring her music to life, and make it real so that it can honestly connect with any audience. Luckily for those of us who are tired of the run of the mill artists singing or more like ruining holiday tunes, Mann has something that will refresh your spirit, and with her raw ability and talent it will take the holidays to a whole different level.

Of course all of this should come not as a surprise, in that Mann has consistently delivered hit after hit, while at the same time she has remained true to her heart and soul which is what inspires all of what she does. However, once again, do not just take this writers word for it, but instead listen for yourself to the sounds of Aimee Mann and her album: One More Drifter in the Snow, because if you do not this will be one holiday regret you won’t soon forget.

A Flint artist you’ll never forget

Flint, Michigan is known to the general public for many things. Some of those things are good, and some are bad, but what’s most important is that Flint can and does represent with its musical talent. Furthermore, it was when I had the chance to hear the sounds of rapper Etrnalee that I truly knew what Flint could bring to the table from a rap perspective. Before we get into Etrnalee and her sound, it’s important to note her reasons for getting into the rap game in the first place. “Nothing really drove me into rapping, I just love music, and when I was young a lot of things happened in my life,” said Etrnalee who started writing more and more when she was younger because no one listened to her feelings.

“I started writing poetry, and then I discovered rap music, and I listened to how rappers would pour their hearts out into their songs, and no one could tell them it was wrong,” said Etrnalee who also enjoyed rap because people actually listened to every word that the rap artists were saying. Still, aside from being heard or even admired, Etrnalee felt a deeper connection to rap music. “I wanted nothing more than that feeling of freedom, and to be somebody with a voice, because it was finally something in my life that truly made me happy,” said Etrnalee. Thus, rap is Etrnalee’s true passion, and it makes her happy, but how hard is it to make it in today’s rap game? “Yeah, it’s hard to make it in the rap game, but that’s why they call it a game, because it’s about how hard you push and keep pushing in spite of all the hardships that life throws at you,” said Etrnalee.

Aside from pushing and the challenge of making it in the rap game, Etrnalee also knows that there are certain stereotypes that many rap artists face. “Some people look at me, being a shapely white female, and they walk out without even listening to my performance, and I don’t care, but yes it does make me angry,” said Entrnalee, who in spite of the ignorant judgments, feels that things like that only make her push harder. With pushing harder, and drive comes passion, and that’s what Etrnalee brings to the table with her performances. Yet, where does that passion come from? “Everything I have been through in my life inspires my art, because I have a very strong emotional background,” said Etrnalee.

Speaking of life, Etrnalee knows what it means to be an artist who has a family, a work life, and to have to still find time to produce and make her music come to life. “Finding time to write, usually involves lack of sleep, because I am engaged and I do have a family, and right now money’s tight for studio time, because I can’t even afford the dollar menu for my little girl,” said Etrnalee who said that she has been very fortunate to get help from other musicians like Grip Manson of Beefy Entertainment, DJPC, NorthernLakes Entertainment, and Roach. Etrnalee is currently working on some new projects that are going to be out real soon. “I am remaking my first single; EtrnaLee Me and that song is a collaboration with Grip Manson of Beefy Entertainment,” said Etrnalee who also hopes to finish her first album; I have Arrived.

Aside from her album you can catch Etrnalee in the Flint area, and with more shows here in Detroit, as she looks to continue to head this way. Furthermore, you can also contact Etrnalee at: etrnalee@yahoo.com or etrnalee@gmail.com and also feel free to contact lisajorlando@michentertainmentlaw.com for more information about Etrnalee. Lastly, also check out Etrnalee at: http://www.myspace.com/1etrnalee , http://www.detroitrap.com/, and http://www.betarecords.com/etrnalee When it comes to the reactions I got from Etrnalee’s performance last Friday night at Lipsticks Lounge, it was nothing but thumbs up. Still, aside from basic cheering, I had the same things said to me over and over again; that girl can spit and she can bring it like no other.

So, if you’re in the mood to hear one of Flint’s latest and greatest, be sure to check out Etrnalee as she makes her way to the D, where her rhymes will be heard and her presence will be made with a genuine talent and a real feeling.

A life and a sound all his own

There is so much to be said about the experiences that shape us into who we are. As human beings we write our life’s stories, without even having to pick up the pen. In the world of music, if there was ever an artist who knows what it means to live a life well written both personally and musically that artist is Thomas Starks. Thus, read on and learn about the talented Thomas Starks who is unapologetically himself with a down to earth and honest attitude. Thomas has thus far lived a life filled with interesting experiences, and those experiences helped shape Thomas into who he is as an artist and with his influences.

“My Father was in the Navy, so we never grounded anywhere, so whatever music scene I landed in, I ate it up,” said Starks who continued on to say that his Father made it a point to have him listen to the Mamma’s and Papa’s. “When I got my first taste of Van Morrison, whoa, it was all over for me, and his LP The Healing Game, changed my life,” said Starks. Still, what about today? If Thomas Starks could collaborate with any artist today who would it be and why? “First and foremost Rob Thomas, because I believe that he is an excellent writer and formulator of concepts, and he’s strategic with his wording,” said Starks. However, as an artist and a writer Thomas Starks has put together truly amazing lyrical content. But, the question is how long should it take to write a song? Is there a time-frame when it comes to writing good lyrics?

“I’ve had songs I’ve written in 15 minutes and then there are those that take ten years,” said Starks who feels that time frames are only relevant when you impose them on yourself. “Tell time to kiss your ass, because there should be no boundaries,” said Starks. Speaking of no boundaries, what advice does an artist like Thomas Starks have for anyone thinking about getting involved in music? “I never like to say that I live in regret, because that’s what the music is for, and you should put the past where it belongs; behind you,” said Starks, who feels that even if it’s just you who believes in your music, that you should never give up.

“You’ve got to keep writing, keep playing, and you’ve got to keep pressing forward, because someone somewhere is listening and waiting for you,” said Starks who feels that musicians are story-tellers and the audiences are waiting to here their voice within their art. With that story-telling from his own life experiences, Thomas Starks knows what drives people to listen to his music. “If there is anything about what I do as a musician that draws people, it would have to be the writing, because people consistently tell me that they can relate to what I’m saying,” said Starks.

Lastly, if you would like to relate or check out Thomas Starks and his music, feel free to by going to: www.thomasstarksmusic.com and/or www.myspace.com/thomasstarks They say that life is meant to be lived, and lived with true intentions. Therefore, if you’re in the mood to check out an artist who has truly lived life with his intentions and his art, than be sure to check out Thomas Starks.

Candy Girl: The one and only

Throughout the game of rap, there has been a consistent history of rappers who put up a front in order to make themselves appear to be something they are really not. If you’re looking for one of those artists, I suggest you go elsewhere. Still, if you want someone who will keep you moving, and who will keep you hopeful than you should definitely check out Candy Girl. For starters Candy Girl is a dream chaser, who is not only chasing her dream today, but she has a never say die attitude.

“The fact that I have a dream motivates and inspires me to keep going, I want to be famous, and I have a lot to say, and the fact that I want it so bad is my inspiration,” said Candy Girl. She would then continue on with some valuable advice. “Never give up, because the day you give up, could have been the day you would have made it,” said Candy Girl. Yet, many people wonder, how is it that an artist comes up with a name like Candy Girl? “I hustled over 3,500 items of candy in high school to pay for studio time to make my first CD/mix-tape; "one Mic one Girl one Dream," said Candy Girl.

Ok so she’s got the name, she’s got the dream, but how far does she hope to go? “I want to be famous, I want my music and talent to be heard, and I will do what it takes to get there,” said Candy Girl. With that ambition came some advice from Candy Girl. “Don’t be afraid to say how you feel, and be you, no matter what everyone else is rapping about,” said Candy Girl. As a female rapper it can be hard, but Candy Girl hopes to bring another female voice to the game, and she’s going to do it her way.

If you want more information on Candy Girl check her out at: www.myspace.com/candygirlmuzic and while you’re there you can listen to her music and check out her upcoming show dates. Also, keep it here as we’ll keep it sweet, and keep it real, and I’ll keep you posted with the latest and greatest about Candy Girl; a star on the rise doing it her way, and making it work.

                                           The Tree House Affect

Over the years, it seems as though the world of rap, has had and still has its artists that try and incorporate God within their rhymes, beats, and message. This can be a hard task in an often misunderstood genre, but at the same time it can also be very refreshing. Thus, for the Father and Son group known as Tree House, which consists of Gerald Johnson Sr. and Gerald Johnson Jr, they look to refresh a person’s soul and present Jesus in a unique way through their music. “Jesus and the Gospel is my inspiration,” said Johnson Jr, who also stated that some of the themes that are promoted throughout the music are to stay in school, and stay drug and alcohol free.

“The name of our tour is Stay in School, and stay Drug free, and that’s also the theme of it as well,” said Johnson Jr. Still, it can often times be hard to promote the good Lord in schools. “We’ve had a greater appreciation from the elementary school kids, but we will reach the teens more, by hitting them from all different angles,” said Johnson Jr. Aside from schools, they also perform at their Church, and they look to make each performance as real and as powerful as possible. “We have a few testimonial songs, and I mean, I still sin, but going to Church helps keep me on the right path,” said Johnson Jr, who wants everyone to check out their Church: http://www.gracewired.com/ Next up, was Gerald Sr, who does the writing for the group, and who shared both his intellect and spirituality throughout the interview.

“Christianity is often frowned upon, because Jesus himself was often frowned upon,” said Johnson Sr, who believes that through his music and his life, that it is important to be real in and with God. “If I can leave a crowd with the love in my heart, than that’s the bottom line of our performance,” said Johnson Sr, who feels it’s very important to give love to everyone. Now, I know that these guys also have high hopes of performing at places like the Fox, but where do they normally perform aside from schools? “We perform at clubs and at Church,” said Johnson Sr, who went on to say that Tree House also does youth rallies.

Furthermore, you can check them out tonight, July 23 through July 31 at the IROCK at 16350 Harper Avenue, in Detroit Michigan. “If you’ve been through what we’ve been through, God wants me to give you my testimony,” said Johnson Sr, who fully believes that God uses discouragement and makes it into a positive. So there you have it a Father and Son team who promote the spirit wherever they go. Seriously, these guys know how to put it down, and put it down for God, by offering a sound and lyrical content that is rich in authenticity and full of vibrant energy. So check out Tree House and keep it locked here for the latest on their shows and happenings.

                                        Get to know him

Hey everyone, it’s time for some fun-filled action and excitement in the world of music! Of course many of you are probably thinking, just what could I be talking about? Well, it’s not really what I am talking about, but instead it’s who. Thus, it was nothing short of a pleasure and thrill to be able to interview, and get the thoughts, ideas, and philosophies of none other than Greg Beyer. Greg Beyer, the person and the musician seem to be and really are intertwined as one. Therefore, he was more than willing to bring 100% of who he is when tackling tough questions about music, future plans, and his career.

“My current plan is to release one or two albums and see if any record companies will bite at them,” said Beyer who is definitely looking to play in late April or May with his other band members. From here Beyer would explain his thoughts and ideals about two very important aspects of music; stereotypes and authenticity. “There is a certain stereotype for rock-stars regarding sex, drugs, and rock n roll but the older I get all I want to do is tour and just have people enjoy themselves,” said Beyer who adamantly believes that all heavy drugs do is a bring a person down and that you can achieve your goals without being strung out.

He continued on with the topic of authenticity. “No matter how you put it, no music is authentic, because all music has been branched and branched from many other bands,” said Beyer who firmly believes that his music is authentic while at the same time it may remind people of other musical artists. He then discussed his influences. “My biggest influences musically would have to be Billy Corrigan, Robert Smith, and Richard Ashcroft because I connect with them the best,” said Beyer. Yet, since this is Detroit, I had to know just what Greg Beyer thought about the current scene and those involved in it. “The current music scene in Detroit is missing the whole scene and it’s missing some balls in that there are not enough rock bands out there and I don’t mean crap rock,” said Beyer. Lastly, it was important to know just what it was that made Greg Beyer tick. In other words what was it that made him decide to get into the world of music?

“I’ve loved music forever, and I remember driving to the mall when I was really young and I would sing along with The Beatles and Neil Diamond, and my family is all musical as well,” said Beyer who felt that music came easy as far being something that he wanted to and does pursue. From here it’s important to note that Greg Beyer, and his musical ventures will be making head-way all over the city of Detroit and elsewhere.

He plans on having a reunion with his former band Sherry and he assured me that his other musical project Detroit Blair, will be heading back to Michigan as well. I hope you’ve enjoyed this time spent getting to know Greg Beyer, and if you get the chance to see him perform, you’ll more than likely find that to be enjoyable as well. So as Greg Beyer keeps rockin, I’ll keep you updated with all of the latest news about his show dates, performances, and anything else you’d like to know about this future star. As always, check back here for more information, and more to come.

Honesty in art and in life

When it comes to the world of rap, artists of all kinds understand that the business can be really hit or miss, and it can be filled with some shady characters. You may get signed, but what if that falls through, and who do or should you really trust? Yet, from an artistic standpoint and from one that is based upon raw talent, it was and is an artist like Saint Anger who filled me in on the realities of rap and hip-hop as he shared his artistic opinions. To give you a little bit of background about Saint Anger, he grew up in Arkansas in gang related areas. “I grew up doing my own thing, and with my art I write about my life,” said Anger.

Currently with Bizzle boy, Saint Anger looks to take his art and others art to the next level. “Bizzle boy as a record label wants to help others realize their dreams,” said Anger. Still, what about those who have realized their dreams to an extent? I mean, what is it that Saint Anger thinks and feels about the current situation with rap music and the industry as a whole? “These kids now days are missing out, and the artists are ruining rap and hip-hop to an extent,” said Anger who also thinks that artists who fabricate their music and tell lies haven’t and don’t make it in the game for very long. He would then continue on.

“Music should evoke the emotional roller-coaster of life at times and my group Made Man is all about helping people, and not being a fraud, so that people understand who we truly are,” said Anger, who wants people to understand this point from an artistic and personal perspective. However, let’s just say that Saint Anger was to be offered the opportunity to be a part of a major rap or hip-hop label, but there was one catch. The catch is that the label would have full creative control. “It doesn’t work like that with labels, but if that’s how they wanted it, it would never happen, because they do not need to take control with my art,” said Anger. Now comes the fun part or at least the part about honesty and life as it relates to the game.

On stage rappers may portray one image or another, but really who are they? For Saint Anger this answer is clear. “Rappers miss out when it comes to talking about the 360 man, and what I am referring to by that is the rapper who is the father, person, lover, and artists like 50 Cent are starting to bring that to light, because it’s the real truth,” said Anger. For more honesty about rap and hip-hop he continued on. “We need more publications for the independent hip-hop scene,” said Anger who hopes that one day he will be able to feed his family from and with his art and artistic talents. Lastly, let’s get into the qualifications, one may need or at least should have to be an artist in the world of rap or hip-hop.

“Anybody can’t rap about anything because if you don’t live it you can’t necessarily rap about it,” said Anger who strongly feels that artists should speak about what they know. Then of course there is the desire and drive aspect. “I don’t want to work a 9-5, but instead I want to do my passion, which is music, and although the music industry itself can never be fixed, it is the fans who dictate what they want,” said Anger who also said that he would be happy touching the world with his music. Although, if you are wondering about Saint Anger, and just where he’s coming from as an artist, he’d be the first one to tell you the truth about anything.

“I’ve been knocked off my hustle and I’ve got back on, and I’m a survivor and I know I’m going to make it,” said Anger. At the end of it all, there is one thing to be said about Saint Anger: He’s honest. He’s honest about art, life, and he has no problem being genuine as both a performer and a person.

Therefore, if you are interested in checking out Saint Anger go to: www.myspace.com/bizzleboysaint or check out www.bizzleboy.com By doing so, you can see all of the info needed about the music, and upcoming show dates and Saint Anger’s possible return to the D. So there you have it, he’s honest, he’s knowledgeable, he’s real, and above all he’s Saint Anger.

Artist Review: Sarah McLachlan

There are many artists who regardless of their art form have had, and will continue to have an affect on the world that is primarily universal. These artists evoke many emotions, thoughts, and feelings in not only our minds and hearts but also in our souls. In many cases it would be wrong and a gross generalization to say that there is one artist in the musical world who is liked, touching enough, or who inspires everyone.

Still, if you look at the facts, not only from a statistical but also from an emotional basis, it is clear to see that Sara McLachlan has come pretty close to that goal. Aside from her sound and the overall amazing quality of her music, McLachlan offers something from a lyrical perspective, that as a writer myself, I not only appreciate it but I admire it. It is not only the fact that what she offers is authentic and unique, but there is also a bone-chilling reality and truth to her art, that speaks to our lives in ways that others artists just can’t. Now, I would have to say that I don’t have songs of McLachlan’s that are my favorites, because I do not think of them as favorites in the traditional sense of the word. However, there are songs of hers that are touching and genuine to my life. They include: Elsewhere, Fear, Angel, Ice Cream, and Answer.

Still, do not limit yourself to such a short selection with McLachlan and what I enjoy from her amazing collection of music. Instead, I would urge you to not only listen to, but also experience the artist who will never stop sharing the essence of her soul and being. That of course is Sara McLachlan.

                             Artist Review: Lil Kim

Many of you may have found that Lil Kim, and her oh so notorious antics, music, and style may have caused your jaws to drop, as she consistently out does herself time and time again. Still, there is a small minority, who after watching her perform on “Dancing with the Stars,” they enjoy her moves, and agree with her scores, but at the same time they have no idea who she is. This makes me chuckle, as I think of someone at the office or hopefully at home doing a search on the internet, and learning about this legendry rap artist who has turned heads, and made headlines for who she is. Although, for those of who you who do not know who Lil Kim is, let’s take a look at her through this review.

In all of her performances, music videos, appearances, and whatever else, Lil Kim is always “Notorious,” for bringing who she is as an artist and a person to the stage. I still remember the first time I caught a glimpse of this oh-so naughty Queen Bee of hip-hop and rap. It was in her music video “Crush on You,” where Kim showed that in a male dominated genre of music, she could play tough with any of the big boys of rap, and she could even bring some of them to their knees with her style, lyrics, and overall attitude.

She came into the game as a member of the east coast rap group Junior Mafia and her solo career went on to shine from there. Her albums include: Hardcore, the Notorious KIM, Labella Mafia, and the Naked Truth. She also released a collaborative mix-tape called Ms. G.O.A.T. of which was highly successful, much like anything else she has put out there musically. Still, I know there are many of you who would like me to unleash the details about Lil Kim and her personal life. However, if you truly know Lil Kim, than you know that she likes to let her music tell her story about who she is and what she’s all about. Also, there is much anticipation for her next album to be released, and currently it is in the works. Yet, aside from what many would perceive as an over the top raunchy artist, Kim has managed to stand up for herself, and dish out an authentic level of expression that shows her consistent and constant creativity.

It is the type of creativity that was inspired by her mentor, friend, and major influence in her life, the late and great Notorious B.I.G. Still, Kim is Kim and no matter who may have influenced her, she is always going to bring a lyrical gift and sound to her genre that has outdone so many. So remember it’s not about what you say, but how you say it, and in the end Lil Kim says it how she wants to, and really what else is there to say about the Queen Bee? The only thing left to say, is go ahead and find out for yourself, and explore the talent and world of Lil Kim.

                    D. Martin: Representing the D in his own way

Let’s face it, most artists in the world of rap and hip-hop try their best to bring a sound, a lyrical content, and a theme to their music that is uniquely their own. Furthermore, even though some artists have fallen into the trap of being redundant, the independent scene of rap and hip-hop has a lot to offer from an authenticity standpoint. Thus, it was at De’fusion Lounge in Warren, where I first got a sample of the bright and prospering future of an artist who is not only representing the D, but he is none other than D. Martin. D. Martin, the man and the artist are incorporated into one individual, and his album ENTER DA GAME brought subjects, topics, and themes with a lyrical content that is rare in the game.

“An artist must be willing and unafraid to set the trend, and try different things with their music, because at the end of the day, you want to stand out from the crowd, and not in it,” said Martin who also believes that artists must do their research of past successful artists to learn how to last in the music business. Yet, isn’t their a balance between learning and repeating? I mean, what about those artists in rap who are attacked or criticized for constantly being redundant? “The critics are right, but not just about rap music, because all music is redundant from Rock n Roll to Country, and Pop, and the list goes on,” says Martin who believes that the key to not being redundant is to talk about topics that most artists don’t talk about, or topics that are rarely talked about.

“An artist must also arrange their songs in a way where it can’t be easily copied,” said Martin. So, with all of this said, let’s talk about his album ENTER DA GAME and what it’s all about. “Everyday life inspires me as an artist, and with ENTER DA GAME there are topics I talk about, that range from a broken down car that you may have had, to encouraging safer sex, to partying in a club,” said Martin who prides himself on making songs for everyone, so that no one is left out. That’s important because really, it’s all about creating a diversified audience, and that’s something D. Martin is doing with his music.

“Everyone can and should listen to my music, because I make music for everyone to relate to, regardless of age, and I talk about everyday life experiences because I want my listeners to know that I am human too, and I go through situations just like they do,” said Martin. As a reminder check out D. Martin on all levels at: www.myspace.com/dmartin1 “When people think of hip-hop, I want them to think of me, and I am willing to work my way up and go through any necessary steps to get to the top,” said Martin. With that said, it’s clear to see that with D. Martin, ENTER DA GAME, and with his future as an artist you should listen up, tune in, and enjoy something that is an expression of a dream coming to life, and a willingness to be real.

The band we know and Rock with

There really is something to be said about a band that has a consistent history. The band with a consistent history that not only plays great music with a great sound, but the one that everyone knows and talks about, and their name is anything but typical. The Natives of the New Dawn are that band, and more than likely you have heard of them, but if not, get ready to be exposed to the band that always makes things happen. The band itself consists of five musicians; Vincent Mann- the Emcee, Tony Nouhan-keys and vocals, Joe Fikany- guitar and vocals, Rob Kershaw-bass, and Thomas Wachter-drums.

It was Vincent Mann who let me in on his thoughts about music, life, and more. “The name is just a description or concept of this project, and we began to call ourselves that,” said Mann who also stated that one day the band may actually pick a band name and confuse the hell out of everybody. Speaking of confusion, there should be no confusion about what genre of music these guys fall into. “If Motown music were to be born for the very first time right now, it would sound like what we are doing, and Motown drew and borrowed from almost all of the genres that were available to them up to that point, which is precisely what we do,” said Mann.

Next up we talked about who inspires the Natives of the New Dawn. “Our inspirations are mostly this hilarious planet and the people who seem to be both happy to be here and confused as to what to do while they are here,” said Mann who also feels that a big inspiration is all of the greatest music that has moved people since the recording of music began. Well, that certainly summed it up, now it’s time to find out where you can see the Natives of the New Dawn in action.

“We play all over, when we were in Detroit, we began locally, and then branched out to other cities, then we focused on establishing ourselves regionally, and upon moving to Los Angeles we put together a few of our national tours,” said Mann, who wants you to check out the Natives of the New Dawn at: www.myspace.com/nativesofthenewdawn Still, there is more to be discussed here as it relates to the current music scene. “I do believe that rehab ruined rock and roll, in that no one takes anything far enough to break out of the low vibration that seems to be floating around,” said Mann who wishes that there was a radio format committed to original independent music.

“Music that makes you feel good is what we like, and thus what we make, because everyone loves music that makes them feel good,” said Mann. Lastly, Vince left some good advice for all of us. “Music is therapy, use it wisely, and life is hilarious, so look around and don’t forget to breathe,” said Mann. Once again, you can check out the Native of the New Dawn’s website at: www.myspace.com/nativesofthenewdawn
