Lil Papi: His story as only he can tell it With a look that is appealing to women everywhere and an authentic sound that only can be defined as his own Detroit rapper Lil Papi goes way beyond showing promise of a hopeful future. Instead, for rapper Lil Papi, and his talented ability as a performer he will be sure to light stages on fire all throughout the D and elsewhere. The goal with any artist in rap is to have the essential total package. That total package includes the following; rhymes, beats, lyrics, and authenticity. Lil Papi not only contains all of the right elements, but he expresses himself with a stage presence that tells the audience that not only is he for real, but he wants you to truly feel what he’s saying. Thus, it’s within your best interest to make sure that you check out Lil Papi out and about in the D. Lastly, make sure that if you’re looking for an artist who can spit well, and bring the vocals that you may even be able to identify with in your own life, and then check out Lil Papi. He’s one artist who will leave you yearning for more even during his performance, and of course afterwards. Megan Grano, in five, no one word can be described as being hilarious. As a hard-working comedian, who has performed all over this great country of ours, Grano is determined to leave her audiences in stitches no matter where she goes. Thus, it was during this exclusive interview where she shared her inspirations, her shows, and her advice for anyone who wants to pursue a career in comedy. “Some key traits to being a good comedian are that you have to be a good listener and a good observer,” said Grano who also recommended that anyone just starting out in comedy should be patient on the long road, and enjoy the incredible people they meet along the way. Next up Grano talked about the shows she has been a part of. “I’ve been traveling the country with my one woman show, Obliged, for about two years, and I also perform with various groups in L.A.” said Grano. Some of those groups in L.A. include Armando at iOWest and Catnip at Second City. Currently, Grano also has 28 youtube videos featured on her website: www.megangrano.com and videos featured on the Second City website, like this one: http://bit.ly/cL7jt1 From here, we got into Grano’s biggest comedic inspirations. “My biggest comedic inspirations are Jane Lynch, Amy Sedaris, Tina Fey, and Amy Phillips, and you may not know Amy Phillips, just yet, but she’s a Grosse Pointe native, and she works her but off,” said Grano who also told me that Amy Phillips was just a host on Bravo’s New Now Next Award’s Show. Thus, it was only fitting to end with the most important question; boxers, briefs, or neither? “Totally briefs, I like full coverage,” said Grano. So be sure to check out Megan Grano, and her skills both online and offline. Don’t forget her website: www.megangrano.com and also be sure to check her out at funnyordie; http://bit.ly/cyABtT On Saturday, July 10, at Blondies Night Club in downtown Detroit, the group D-TOX Entertainment proved that not all hope is lost in the D, when it comes to getting good solid beats, with unique lyrical content and rhymes. Furthermore, the group was able to tear it up, with songs like “Get off my block,” and they were able to feature a look and feel that is authentic to the rap game as a whole. It was through their expressiveness as artists that D-TOX Entertainment was able to crank it up for the crowd, and keep the crowd constantly interested in what they’re doing and what they’re all about. Also, with beats that weren’t just artificial cliché rap beats, it’s clear to see that D-TOX Entertainment will always be in the mix, and be a big hit wherever they go, in the D or otherwise. Lastly, it’s important to focus on the overall stage presence that any group of any genre has. Many journalists, such as me can be extra critical when it comes to a group’s stage presence, and how they present themselves. This is especially true when it comes to rap. Thus, it is my pleasure to say that D-TOX Entertainment truly understands the meaning of utilizing the whole stage, bringing the necessary amounts of energy, and staying authentic to who they are as individuals and performers. With that said, be sure to check out D-TOX Entertainment at: www.d-toxentertainment.com and/or www.myspace.com/d-toxentertainment Don’t miss these guys live, as they will truly bring their game and their talent, and give you an enjoyable mix of authenticity, and true rhymes that you can connect with. For any one out there who has dared to dream, dive head first, and go for it, they know that it isn’t about opportunity knocking on their door. Furthermore, for aspiring model Sarena Almon, she’s not just knocking on the industries door, she’s ready to tear it down, to show the world, just what she’s made of. She shared her thoughts in this exclusive interview. “My passion for modeling is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a little girl, and I can't see myself doing anything else, and its fun,” said Almon who knows the importance of staying passionate, and not letting others negative opinions bring you down, because you’ve got to keep your head up. This is of course very true with Sarena who has big future plans. “I’m trying to fly to New York this Summer to take my career further,” said Almon who is also looking at and working with the agency Identity Studio. She then went on to tell me about her inspirations when it came to becoming a model. “My biggest inspirations are Tyra Banks and Miss Jade from the hit show America’s Next Top Model,” said Almon who admires these two females because they teach you to have confidence in yourself and believe in yourself. Still, just how long does Miss Sarena Almon plan on doing modeling? “I plan on doing modeling, until my body gets all wrinkly, where I can’t show it any more, and believe me world that’s years from now,” said Almon who went on to say that as soon as events come up, she’ll let everyone know. Thus, when it comes to aspiring model, Sarena Almon, she knows what she wants, and nothing is about to stop her from getting it. She’s confident, sexy, smart, and ready to go, with a take no prisoners attitude. Lastly, let this stunning beauty with amazing confidence, show you exactly what it means to make the most of being beautiful, by living by the saying; if you got it, flaunt it.

John Rios: His talent, his art, his words
For John Rios, becoming a graphic artist was about taking the visualizations of the mind and making them come to life. As a person, John Rios knows what it means to go with the flow, and take things in stride. As an artist, John Rios knows that’s it’s all about connecting your concepts and thoughts with human emotions, and letting people feel the art as it comes to life. He shared his thoughts during this interview.
“I really didn’t know that I wanted to be a graphic artist, I just wanted to be an artist,” said Rios who realized that by letting go of preconceived notions about his art, that he could truly connect better and be more successful by being a graphic artist. He then continued on. “Artists have a hard time letting go of what they create, it’s very personal, and they feel attacked if you don’t love what they do,” said Rios who he himself admits that he has felt that way before.
Thus, what about being a graphic artist? Do you need to bring a vision with you before you start a project? “Having a vision is not too important, it’s more about having the experience because almost everyone comes to you with a hot idea, but one should understand the pitfalls of their ideas, and knowing when your ideas are not stellar is a good thing too,” said Rios. Still, even to have the initial ideas, or to want to pursue this type of art, you’ve got to have influences. “My biggest influences are people like my high school art teacher who lost his job for standing up for his art, and of course My Mom, and artists like Frank Frazetta, Borris, Chahuli, and really too many artist too count,” said Rios.
Rios has worked with such noteworthy individuals as Ted Nugent, Uncle Cracker, Alice in Chains, Rod Stewart, the Detroit Tigers, and more. Also, follow the links below to see his work:

Seeing what’s new and what’s good with D.Martin
He’s a familiar face all over the D, and on JPKGROOVEHOUSE, and for rapper D.Martin it’s all about keeping the momentum going in the right direction, while he continues to chase the dream. He never loses focus, or sight of what matters, and at the same time he wants others to remain hopeful that the D can and will bounce back. Yet, D.Martin is more than just a visionary of hope for the future of Detroit, he is his own man and his own artist. Thus, in this interview, where I caught up with him it was important to hear what he had to say on all levels.
“I’m still pushing behind my debut album Enter Da Game, which I recently found out that I sold a few digital downloads over in Europe,” said Martin. He then continued on with more great news. “Fans will now be able to purchase their very own D.Martin’s “Beat It Up”ringtone by texting 3156141 to 69937, and I’m also still putting together showcases for other local artist, so stay tuned for the Live Your Dreamz concert series to start very soon,” said Martin. For an artist like D.Martin, not only is he working on his own art, but he wants to help others bring their skills to the table. Still, speaking of bringing it to the table, D.Martin certainly does that through his craft, but the question remains how? Furthermore, what makes him so likeable as an artist? “My uniqueness, my versatility, and my real life attitude when I create songs are what I bring to the table,” said Martin who also feels that way too many artist like to rap about fairy tales instead of being themselves and keeping it real. He then continued on. “More people can relate to working a 9 to 5 then they can about selling bricks, and that’s why you will never hear me rapping about something I don’t know about,” said Martin who prides himself on just being himself. “There’s only one D.Martin and can’t anyone copy me,” said Martin.
Speaking of artists, copying, and the current scene, D.Martin also weighed in on his thoughts about the situations in the D, what it means to have good quality rap music, and his overall inspirations. “I have no new inspirations as of now other than Jesus Christ, but that’s nothing new, he always has been an inspiration to me,” said Martin who also greatly appreciates the fans who keep him going. “If they didn’t buy my records then you wouldn’t know who D.Martin is today,” said Martin who thanked the fans for all the inspiration they’ve given throughout his career. Next up, we talked about the quality of rap music in general. “Music with a message is good quality rap music, but at the same time the beat has to be catchy and the hook does to, because I’ve heard songs with a great message, but the beat was whack, or the beat was good and the message was whack,” said Martin. Lastly, we talked about the D, and its current state of affairs. “As far as losing faith in Detroit’s music scene, honestly it can be a little discouraging at times but at the end of the day you got to figure out why you want to keep pursing music,” said Martin who keeps pursuing his dreams because he keeps getting the positive feedback from fans, but he understands the discouraging feelings towards the D with everything that’s been going on politically, and otherwise.
Still, for rapper D.Martin, the fans, the faith, and those that know his talent and ability are what fuel his consistent ability to chase the dream, and never give up. “Just hearing someone say they love what you do is a great motivational boost of its own,” said Martin. Thus, you should remember to check out the latest and greatest with D.Martin whenever and wherever you can. Real rap, a real expression of self, and all the right aspects of an artist rolled into one; that’s D.Martin.
Gerald Johnson Sr: Sharing the Gospel through his art
Rapper Gerald Johnson Sr, isn’t using God to capitalize or further his career, but instead, God is his career, and he’s not afraid to share the message through his rhymes of just how God made him who he is today. Furthermore, Gerald shared everything from his thoughts, to his faith in our sit down interview, where I learned what it means to follow Jesus, no matter what.
“Life in general is basic, there are basic steps, and that’s the inspiration behind one of my new songs,” said Johnson who when asked about the song, told me that the song itself is not Gospel, it’s just real life. Yet, even when sharing a real life testimony, doesn’t it seem as though people still don’t want to hear it when it comes to Jesus? He then continued on. “The message is actually received better these days,” said Johnson who feels that rap music drives the world, and the message of God with rap could drive the Church. Still, what about before hand? Wasn’t Jesus not as accepted a few years back? “The world wasn’t ready for Jesus back then, because it was just too much at once,” said Johnson.
Next up Johnson shared insights about his faith. “The gospel is a mirror into the soul,” said Johnson who also feels that us as human beings are rebellious to God in many ways. “I share my testimony, every time I rap,” said Johnson who went on to say that the Bible tells us that we humans are not perfect, and we’re going to fail. Still, For Gerald Johnson Sr, there is hope. “It’s very simple, you suffer with Christ, you reign with Christ,” said Johnson who raps about a message of change. However, what about the concept of authenticity as it relates to Christianity, rap, and life? In Gerald’s words, how does God judge who we are, and what does he see? “God judges and sees the inner, and he wants people to cling to him at all times, and to not be afraid to open up,” said Johnson who believes that human beings should be transparent in all that they do. “You can’t worry about what everyone thinks, you’ve just got to let yourself show as a person, and that’s what I do as an artist and a person,” said Johnson who reminds us that life is just a breathe to God.
For more insightfulness on God, rhymes, and everything in between I highly recommend checking out Gerald Johnson Sr, who will bring the heat, bring the Gospel, and do it all with his raw and real testimony. Also, be sure to check him out on Saturday June 5th at Veterans Memorial Park in
Roseville, Mi as he will be laying it down for this years relay for life event. Sharing his message as only he can, Gerald Johnson Sr shows no signs of slowing down in his quest to share the good news of God and light with the world, and for that we thank him, and enjoy his creativity, artistic flow, and truth.
Artist Review: Sarah McLachlan
There are many artists who regardless of their art form have had, and will continue to have an affect on the world that is primarily universal. These artists evoke many emotions, thoughts, and feelings in not only our minds and hearts but also in our souls. In many cases it would be wrong and a gross generalization to say that there is one artist in the musical world who is liked, touching enough, or who inspires everyone. Still, if you look at the facts, not only from a statistical but also from an emotional basis, it is clear to see that Sara McLachlan has come pretty close to that goal.
Aside from her sound and the overall amazing quality of her music, McLachlan offers something from a lyrical perspective, that as a writer myself, I not only appreciate it but I admire it. It is not only the fact that what she offers is authentic and unique, but there is also a bone-chilling reality and truth to her art, that speaks to our lives in ways that others artists just can’t. Now, I would have to say that I don’t have songs of McLachlan’s that are my favorites, because I do not think of them as favorites in the traditional sense of the word. However, there are songs of hers that are touching and genuine to my life. They include: Elsewhere, Fear, Angel, Ice Cream, and Answer.
Still, do not limit yourself to such a short selection with McLachlan and what I enjoy from her amazing collection of music. Instead, I would urge you to not only listen to, but also experience the artist who will never stop sharing the essence of her soul and being. That of course is Sara McLachlan.
Artist and CD Review: Money Man Money Plan
For the group Money Man Money Plan it’s all about raw honesty, the love of money, and the rhymes that back up who they are and what they’re all about. Now, these guys aren’t into your average beats, or one album filled with songs that all sound the same. Instead, they talk about who they are, how they view the world, and what it is they want. If anything, what most people will find is that not only do the members of Money Man Money Plan know what they want, but they do it with their own style and they don’t and won’t apologize about it.
As previously mentioned you get an album with Money Man Money Plan that brings beats and rhymes that the D has been in dyer need of. Although, the central focus is about money, I urge listeners to look and take each song a step further with Money Man Money Plan. Each individual song tells its own unique story and the picture it paints is crystal clear for any listener to clearly understand. Furthermore, you can take away music that you feel on all levels, and music that you can identify with at different times of your day.
Thus, the reality is this; enough with the hype, and enough with the talk. Instead, just listen, and check out the CD “On the Rise Chapter 1,” from the D’s proud rap group Money Man Money Plan. It’s about time we brought the dollar, the grind, and the truth about Detroit back to Detroit, and that’s exactly what these artists are doing.
A creatively balanced genre
As a human being, I really feel that life needs balance. This is also true as it relates to creative writing, and art. Sometimes the best art in life makes a profound statement within someone, because it is balanced. Now, when it comes to creative writing, I know there are some of you out there who don’t always think of creative writing as balanced. Creative writing should be what it is, and that should be that. However, as a creative writer, even though I enjoy writing things like poetry and monologues, where I can just be creative, I also enjoy using my creativity in an artistic genre that is balanced. The genre I am referring to is Magical Realism.
Off the top of my head, and based upon what I learned in college, from a literary standpoint Magical Realism is the artistic genre where there is an element of magic within reality, of which only the main character can see, know, or experience. Also, the magic itself is meant to teach the main character something about life and their existence. Furthermore, their can be more than one main character who experiences the magic.
Honestly, I’ve only used Magical Realism in two short stories. I have found it to be a challenging artistic genre from a literary perspective, and it is also very balanced. Furthermore, I would urge those of you who are creative writers to not only try and write some Magical Realism, but also see for yourself just how balanced a genre it is.
Now, there could be some of you who disagree, or who have never heard of Magical Realism. Furthermore, there is a real debate within many creative writers about Magical Realism and its definition. Also, many creative writers feel that Magical Realism is nothing more than a fancy name for fantasy writing. Although, there are others who truly believe that Magical Realism from a literary and creative writing standpoint is its own artistic genre by itself.
Regardless of discussion, there are two things that should come from all of this. First, for those of you who have never heard of Magical Realism, I urge you to do some research about it, and see if it could work for you and your creative writing. Lastly, I hope to spark some debate, and I really do want feedback. I would love to hear what many of you think and feel about the definition I was given for Magical Realism, if you’ve already used it in your own work, and do you believe that Magical Realism is just another term for fantasy? With Magical Realism there is a lot of ground to be covered, and debate to be had, so feel free to let me know what’s on your mind.
Artist Review: MoeNitty
It’s safe to say that if you’re a rap artist in the greater Detroit area that you have definitely heard of MoeNitty. Still, this isn’t going to be about MoeNitty’s work as a promoter, but instead, it’s about MoeNitty the rap artist. A rap artist who is doing more than breaking through, but instead he’s paving the way for the future rap and hip-hop scene here in the D.
To avoid scattering from album to album, and song to song, let’s focus on the story of MoeNitty and who he is told through his album Rated M: Chronicles of a Scorpio. From the first interview I conducted with MoeNitty, I learned that Moe raps about sex, love, and everything else in that world. With that said, it would only be fitting to begin by focusing on his very popular and widely known hit from the Rated M album, titled: “Better than Yo Baby Daddy.” With that song, MoeNitty has treated many fans and artists alike to a song that many would consider one of the greatest sex raps of all time. Yet, what makes it so great is not the raunchy lyrics, or the attempt to put on a players façade. What makes it such a hot song is that Moe delivers the track with class, and a beat that isn’t trying to be in your face, over the top, or phony. When MoeNitty raps about his experiences and wisdom with the track “Better than Yo Baby Daddy,” it’s about being honest, and it’s told with a laid back beat that shows male artists everywhere that the best expression of sex is told by being genuine and truthful.
Furthermore, MoeNitty also discusses other topics on his Rated M album that speaks to the point of who he is as a person and as an artist. The point I’m referring to is truth. Also, with vocals, a presence, and an ability to captivate an audience in the same way that 2Pac once did, people should get ready for this Detroit based rapper to not only take off, but to also bring back the hope, promise, and truth that our great city and the rap game needs.
Jim Valo: Telling the truth, the whole truth
Jim Valo, as a person and as an artist knows that it’s not about the people you know, but it’s about the person you are. During his performance, he shared himself as an artist. During this interview, he laid it down in his words, about his style, art, and everything in between.
“I’m fueled by the struggle, and I’m motivated by the hustle, and yes there is a difference, and that difference is that Jim Valo doesn’t have a conscience, but he does use common sense,” said Valo who as a grown man has grown as a person, and is chasing his musical ambitions. Still, who is Jim Valo, and what about rappers and the rap game? “Rappers have to be multifaceted to display the different aspects of their lives, you can’t just be a one dimensional MC,” said Valo. Then, we move into the world of inspirations. “My Mother is my greatest inspiration, and Detroit has definitely inspired me, and the thought of making it a huge success as a city, has truly inspired me,” said Valo.
He then continued on about the game, and rap music in general. “One thing I would change is the way that radio force feeds music to people, and I would also change the overall lyrical content, cause rappers should be more than just rappers, they should be a voice for social injustice,” said Valo who feels that rap is taken seriously these days, but not looked as equally important as other musical genres.
Lastly, Jim shared information about his upcoming talents and skills. “I’m currently working on my album, which does not have a release date just yet, but I will keep everyone posted,” said Valo. So, if you’re out, if you’re looking, and if you’re ready to hear someone who brings the intelligence with is art form, than be sure to check out the artist and the man known as Jim Valo.
Diddy: Yeah he did it and then some
When many people think of the definition of success in the Entertainment and Music world as it relates to hip-hop, they usually think of one Sean P-Diddy Combs. Diddy, Puffy, or whatever else you want to call him, may seem like a workaholic, but in the end it truly paid off. His can do spirit, and his advice to not worry about what the world thinks, has aided in helping him become the success he is today. Yet, isn’t there a certain personality, that fits this type of success? Let’s dive even further, and find out just what type of person it takes to be a Diddy of sorts.
The key is to remember that when you are, or if you’re going to be a Diddy of sorts, then you have to be a jack of all trades and where many hats. Much like Diddy’s ex, Jennifer Lopez, you have to be into many different worlds in order to succeed. That means you’re a fashion mogul, music producer, and entertainer all in one. This type of thinking has been used to describe the personality of many highly successful individuals in the Entertainment world. Now, does this mean, it doesn’t involve long hours, or a very busy schedule? Not at all, but it does mean that you will reap the benefits, if you can handle the heat.
Being a jack of all trades isn’t easy. However, it can be done, and it can be done, by any one of us. The goal is that on the way to the top, don’t sweat the small stuff with people’s opinions, and remember that if it’s your passion, you can make it happen. After all, look at Diddy, he started off small, and now he’s the bad boy for life who wears many hats, and wears them with style and success.
Scarves that make a difference
For Emily Droulliard, making scarves to raise money for her team for the 2010 Relay for Life of Roseville is very personal, real, and it’s what she loves to do. Only in her teens, Emily designs and creates scarves that not only help make a difference in the fight against cancer, but they also make a positive difference in the way you will look with your sense of style. They come in any color, pattern, and/or design, but yet there is more to the story. There is more to the story, as Emily shared her thoughts on fashion, and how she creates what she creates with her own sense of style and individuality.
“I think that people need to have their own fashion sense, and not be judged on it,” said Drouillard who also believes that just because something is labeled as popular or in, doesn’t mean that you have to go with it for your own unique style. As it relates to style and her scarves, one would believe that the creation of a fly, fashionable, and fun scarf would take a lengthy time. However, Emily informed me that this isn’t the case. “Making a scarf isn’t too hard, as long as you know how to crochet, so the estimated time making one straight through is 2 hours,” said Drouillard who has been in high demand for scarves with the colors pink, brown, blue, and black in them. “Aside from scarves, I am very creative, I do many crafts, like creating things like bracelets, doing scrapbooking, and making stepping stones,” said Drouillard.
Although, at this current time she only considers her fashionable aspirations a hobby, it is highly recommended that you contact Emily Drouillard asap to get the scarf that will make you look great, all well making a real difference in the fight against cancer. The scarves themselves are only $10.00 a piece, and with her talent and creativity, Emily Drouillard can create the look you want, with the colors you want, so you can have the look and feel you want and deserve. For contact information for Emily, email her at: emilydrouillard@yahoo.com
Till Death has many meanings
For writer and director Janaya Black, it wasn't just about having a dark imagination with her movie Till Death... do us part, but instead it was about painting a real life portrait of the betryals, harsh realities, and circumstances of love and life. The film itself features a local cast of actors and actresses who tell this story of business, pleasure, and pain. It was during the viewing of the film, where I got to sit down with Janaya Black, and talk about the creation process of the film, and much more.
"I'm a writer for the Michigan FrontPage, and I have published three books," said Black, of whom believes firmly in the philsophy of "Judge not lest ye be judged." This information came as no surprise to me after viewing the film, and the harsh circumstances the main characters are put in throughout this story of love, business, and pain. Yet, the question that will remain to many is if this type of thing really does happen. "It probably does happen, it probably happens a lot," said Black. Regardless of if you agree or disagree after seeing the film, one thing is for sure: Black tells a story that many are afraid to talk about, and that many won't talk about.
As for a synopsis, I'll be brief about Till Death... do us part because I don't want to give too much away when it comes to this dark work of art. The gist of it is that starting your own business can be rough, but when you borrow money from the wrong people, it can be even worse, and when family gets thrown in the mix, look out. This film comes highly recommended and for more information about it go to: www.myspace.com/tilldeaththemovie. "Remember, it's important not to throw judgement around," said Black. Not only is this a good life lesson, but after the twists of a movie that will leave you ready for conversation and debate, you will have plenty to think about, and you may even think: what would I do if that were me? A question that can only be sparked by a true work of art, a true work of art such as this.
Get it all with MyMobileMafia
Let’s be real about it, and let’s face it; getting your project off the ground as an artist in the D is a HUGE challenge. You’ve got so much competition, and unless your flyers are captivating enough, many people just won’t be interested. Thus, it’s time to be smart about it; it’s time to head to the world of social media. Still, if you don’t know enough about it, or if you’re tweets aren’t just enough, then you need to turn to the experts. You need to turn to the experts at MyMobileMafia; www.mymobilemafia.com
Tiffany, who described herself as the H.B.I.C. of MyMobileMafia, filled me in on everything going on with this exciting group. “The original idea of mymobilemafia.com, was a place to blog about cell phones, cause we are both very into cell phone technology and thought that we should educate people who don’t know about it,” said Tiffany. She then continued on. “This idea turned into mymobilereports.com, which is a cell phone blog site, and that emerged because mymobilemafia.com had developed into something else, that something else was something we had been thinking about for four plus years,” said Tiffany.
MyMobileMafia also has a distinction, a rare distinction in what they can do for artists. “We stream from your venue or event to let the world see your talents and/or abilities, and we give you the domain to be who you really are; to be real,” said Tiffany. Yet, Tiffany, isn’t the only one on staff with MyMobileMafia, instead the group consists of four others. The four other members include Kofi (the CEO), Lauren (the Go-Getter), Shevy (the Frontwoman), and Blk (the Frontman).
For artists and other peeps who want to see the work of MyMobileMafia, they should head to: www.mymobilemafia.com and be sure to catch them all over the D at a variety of different shows. Also, the stars of MYMobileMafia agree with me, in that they know that artists here in the D need the exposure they deserve. “MyMobileMafia gives people what they’re asking for; a place where they can network and socialize without all the spam and snowball fights,” said Tiffany who went on to say that it’s a place where Country and Hardcore, become friends, and so much more.
MyMobileMafia also streams artists out of state, and they stream everything, by not allowing themselves to be defined by one genre or artistic group. “The concept was derived from giving people the opportunity to see the venue/party before they arrived,” said Tiffany. Therefore with a dynamic mix of respect, hustle, and exposure, the team at MyMobileMafia can and will bring you everything from artists at MoeNitty shows to those who sing with the style of Michael Bolton. They show no signs of slowing down, and if you’re ready to be exposed, to bring your best artistic talents, and to do it all while reaching a dynamically diverse audience, then go get it done, and go get it done right with MyMobileMafia: www.mymobilemafia.com
MMA: You have to see it live at the Palace
No, it’s not about promotion, and it’s not about giving you another reason to roll your eyes. Instead, what it is about is the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, and the tremendous display of athletics, and determination that took place just under two weeks ago at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan. It was a display that featured good competition, tremendous sportsmanship, and yeah lots of fists, takedowns and kicks.
The sport of Mixed Martial Arts has been covered on JPKGROOVEHOUSE before, but when you see it live as I did, you will truly know what these athletes go through as they work their way to the top in this tough, rough, and what some would call controversial sport. The Main Event Featured a Fly Weight Championship match between two ferocious females who stopped at nothing when it came to battling it out for the gold. Furthermore, there was also a submission challenge that was amazing, and the first fight ended in fourteen seconds. Through it all, the cage, the rage, and everything, the fighters showed a level of sportsmanship, courage, and integrity that is beyond respectable in this very aggressive and highly competitive sport.
Yet, shameless promotions are the exact opposite of what MMA is all about. Thus, if you have the chance to see some real MMA, be sure to check out one of the upcoming venues coming up at the Palace. It’s a real sport with real fighting; no glitz, no glam, just rugged, rough, and tough beat-downs, that will leave you thirsting for more.

Even though many people may not be a big fan of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), their DVD titled Blood Bath Wrestling’s Most Incredible Steel Cage Matches does feature some pretty amazing, and awesome bouts. Making a real difference for the inner city Youth
Coming up this Saturday, November 28, 2009, the Community Connect Consulting, Because We Care Foundation, will be hosting a fundraiser where artists can truly make their voices heard for a good cause. The funds raised will go towards programs and charitable events for the CCC, Because We Care Foundation, including a Christmas party for the youth in Southeastern Michigan communities. Yet, it goes even further than that, as artists will have the opportunity to showcase their talent and potentially win $500.
This Saturday it is going to be the “Rock the Mic Talent Showcase,” and it is going to be held at Nick’s Gas Light, which is located at 443 Grand River in Detroit, and it will be from 8PM till 2AM. There is expected to be over 20 of Detroit’s very talented artists, as well as local celebrity artists who along with the audience will determine the winner of the talent showcase. All in all, you should be sure to get there in plenty of time as a large crowd is expected for this great event.
Now, for those of you who don’t know about the CCC, Because We Care Foundation, I am pleased to give you some information from their President Adriane Mayes about their philosophy and about the impact they plan on having on the inner city youth. “The mission and overall goal of the CCC, Because We Care Foundation is to impact the community by providing services to underprivileged youth,” said Mayes. “The organization was established as an outreach to young people to provide athletic and academic enhancement through many different ways,” said Mayes, and those ways include; leadership, life, and employment skills, financial literacy, college planning, environmental awareness, conflict resolution, healthy sexuality, substance abuse awareness, and healthy living.
The CCC, Because We Care Foundation is a new organization, set up in September of this year, and they bring a lot to the table from an experience and organizational background. “I collectively have over 20 years of working with thousands of different types of youth, from all over the world,” said Mayes. She then continued on. “My partners and I collaborate with all of our different types of experiences and collectively plan to assist the youth through our Because We Care Foundation efforts,” said Mayes who along with her partners has previously conducted mentoring and tutoring to youth of all ages.
“Everyone has obstacles, and life will bring you ups and downs, but the key is to learn from everything: your past, your mistakes, and to continue to grow as a person, and help others,” said Mayes. With that said, it will be this Saturday, November 29 at Nicks Gas Light in Detroit where artists can put their talents, time, and hard efforts to good use for the youth. It’s not easy being an artist, and it’s not easy for the underprivileged youth, but together both parties can make a difference for one another through artistic expression, inspiration, and by giving hope. It is that hope that will be given this Saturday by artists, the audience, and by the CCC, Because We Care Foundation that will truly make a real difference for the youth that needs it most.
Shantinique Music Incorporated; Giving the D hope
I’ve honestly never written something like this for JPKGROOVEHOUSE, but let’s face it, it’s not every day you have that feeling of great energy, that encounter with really great people, and an overall vibe that is very necessary, especially here in Detroit. Well, long story short, that’s exactly what happened during a visit to Shantinique’s Music Store on Harper in Detroit. For CEO Barry Beal, SR, he not only executed his vision of creating a music and sportswear store in Detroit, but he did it with a look and feel that will make you believe you are truly at home; at home here in Detroit.
Aside from the selection, which was overwhelming, what stood out to me the most was the variety. It was a variety of music, movies, clothing, and much more, all of which continue to sell, even during tough economic times. Still, it’s not only the merchandise that makes Shantinque’s Music Store so great, it’s also the involvement they have with local artists. I say this because, while I was there, they were hosting an album signing for rapper JIGGSAW, a local Detroit based artist who appreciates, values, and knows the importance of being able to promote his art, and do it all at Shantinque’s Music Store, where he can reach a wide, yet local audience.
As previously mentioned, the concept behind Shantinque’s Music Store in Detroit is not about being over the top, in your face, or being unapproachable, but instead it’s about the right vibes, the right sounds, and the right looks all here in the D. The store itself is located at 8933 Harper Road, in Detroit. So if you’re looking for music and more, and if you’re looking to just come as you are, than look no further than Shantinique’s Music Store, making Detroit proud, and keeping things local.
Future Star Alert
For some people a night at the theater, enjoying some great entertainment is the perfect way to wrap up their week. The show can be a great time, and what make it great is the people who put the effort into these shows with their great acting abilities. Thus, for this piece I want to introduce to a star on the rise that is currently chasing her dream and making things happen. That star is none other than Kelli Marie Sarakun, and she’s got the scoop on her dreams, her abilities, and why she got into theater work in the first place.
“I decided to go into theater simply because I love doing it, and I was trying to imagine myself in other careers and I just couldn't, and I need to do what I love,” said Sarakun. Still, love may be one thing, but isn’t it hard to break into an industry where there is so much cut throat competition? “There are always moments when I'm worried about being able to make it in the business, but I try as much as possible to think positively, and imagine myself succeeding,” said Sarakun who knows the importance of staying optimistic and keeping a positive spirit. This may seem like common sense with anything, but with Sarakun it’s the true words of someone who has done theater for a long time. “I've been doing theater for 14 years, since I was in Kindergarten, when I played the Virgin Mary in a Christmas play,” said Sarakun who has played in roles such as Sandy in Grease, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, and Madame Thenardier in Les Miserables.
“I have also played one of the three blind mice, which was probably one of the most fun experiences I've had,” said Sarakun. Yet, what about right now, and what shows is Sarakun currently working on? “Currently, I am not in any shows, but the most recent show I did was Ragtime, in which I played the role of Emma Goldman, the famous feminist anarchist,” said Sarakun. “It was an amazing experience, and in September, I will be auditioning for several shows,” said Sarakun who can’t wait to audition. So what about the dramatics of all this? Is there really drama both on and off the stage? “In theatre, drama is everywhere-on and off the stage, and as actors we are naturally very emotional people, and competing for roles can get very dramatic, and unfortunately jealousy is very common in the business,” said Sarakun. She would then continue on.
“The challenge an actor must learn to overcome is to stop worrying about what others think and focus on himself, and it may sound selfish, but if we live in fear, nothing will ever change or work how we want it to,” said Sarakun. Lastly, if you are thinking about pursuing a career in acting, Sarakun has one simple question that you should ask yourself. “If someone is thinking about getting into theater, he/she needs to ask themselves if they really love acting,” said Sarakun who believes that you shouldn’t let the world tell you that you can’t do it, but instead you need to be the maker of your success in theater. So the stage is set, the lights are on bright, but can you perform? You can figure that out later, but for now be sure to check out more info about Kelli Marie Sarakun, and her upcoming shows, as this future star seeks to turn her dreams into a reality.
JPBTV: You need to know them
Let’s face it, it’s hard in today’s world to be an artist and showcase your talent. It’s even harder in many respects to do that in Detroit. Yet, there is hope, there is a way, and there is a media source that truly understands and represents for hip-hop artists everywhere. Of course I’m referring to JPBTV, and after getting some questions answered from their C.E.O. DaButtonpusha, all I can say is that JPBTV is the way to go for showcasing what you’ve got. However, if you’ve never heard of JPBTV, DaButtonpusha will fill you in on what it is.
“JPBTV is a media source and outlet for underground hip-hop artists world-wide,” said DaButtonpusha who also said that JPBTV’s concept is to provide a well-balanced hip-hop media outlet. “We want Emcee’s, film producers, videographers, dj’s, and a lot more,” said DaButtonpusha. Next we got into the driving force and inspiration behind JPBTV. “We want to document all the undocumented talent and to showcase as much talent from as many places as we possibly can,” said DaButtonpusha. Of course with the hip-hop and rap industry, it is hard to get the recognition you need as an artist, and JPBTV understands that. “It’s hard to get anything you need if you are not a grinder, because the first push begins with you, and too many people depend on people to give them something,” said DaButtonpusha who also feels that this type of attitude has really and truly distorted the industry.
“If more people were willing to work together, than things would be a lot easier,” said DaButtonpusha. Speaking of working together, let’s get more in depth with the artists that JPBTV works with. “We want underground hip-hop artists who have enough courage to want to take their craft full steam ahead, and we want artists whose style aims to be uplifting, and full of substance,” said DaButtonpusha who hopes that these artists and their music will help to heal the youth of this nation. Still, it must be hard to even do JPBTV during these hard economic times.
“It is very hard at times to keep it going, because the station can only survive with the viewers,” said DaButtonpusha who also mentioned that the station is doing everything it can to increase its viewership. In spite of the economy, hip-hop artists everywhere really do need to check out JPBTV for a great many reasons. JPBTV offers 24/7 video documentation through their online T.V. station, they have great connections and hook-ups to programming out of state, and they offer three community based T.V. showcases.
The list could go on into another story, but for now you should check out: www.jpbtv.com and contact DaButtonpusha, who knows how to help you represent your talent, your art, and who you are so you can get the exposure that you need. Thus, if you’re still sitting around waiting for something to happen, than you should think again and get the difference you want and need with JPBTV.
The Wrong fight to pick
Oh yeah, get ready as we will now revisit the exciting world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Furthermore, we will do so with a twist. It was after speaking to Bill Zanetti, a six year MMA fighter, that I learned the reality about the show “Bully Beat-Down,” and just what could and does happen if a bully doesn’t learn who they should and should not pick a fight with. Clearly, common sense would tell me that most bullies wouldn’t want to pick a fight with an MMA fighter, but what happens if they do? “An MMA fighter can and does do what’s on the show, and they can do a whole lot more,” said Zanetti who went on to say that if you took the headgear off the bully and had them fight an MMA rules match, that the fight itself may last 30 seconds, if that, and the bully would either submit or be knocked out.
Still, since the majority if not all of the bullies on the show are men, the question that remains is: what are these bullies thinking? “From past experience guys always think they are tougher than they really are, and they all watch UFC and think they can do it because one day at the bar they beat someone up, but people really don’t understand the ground game, and the quickly realize it’s a lot harder than it looks,” said Zanetti. Although, what about an individuals build; doesn’t that help?
“A person’s build really doesn’t matter, because there is a fighting style for every build,” said Zanetti who went on to say that you just have to find the style that works best for you. Yet, the training itself must be hard. “The training can be very intense but it depends on what you want to do,” said Zanetti, who also stated that if you want to train to be a fighter, that you will be pushed towards a breaking point. Finally, there was some helpful advice for bullies everywhere. “Don’t try and fight MMA fighters, because you will get hurt,” said Zanetti.
Thus, it is important to remember that what may look easy is definitely not, and bullies everywhere should be careful. Furthermore, after seeing some of the training these guys do, I would highly recommend that bullies everywhere reconsider their options. Also, for those who look to train of give MMA a shot, remember it doesn’t matter what type of body you have, but what does matter is the effort you are willing to put into your training and the willingness you have to never give up.
Getting inked and doing it right
Okay, so maybe you’re a total rebel, or you want something that means something to you, or worse case scenario; you drank too much and did it on a dare. Well, hopefully it’s not the last one of those options, but if you are thinking about getting a tattoo, then you should definitely go with a professional, and a real artist. The real artist I am referring to is Donny of whosyourdonny? Tattoo located in Fenton, MI. Donny has some words of wisdom, an impressive knowledge base and background, and an understanding of the body that many other tattoo artists may not. There are many misconceptions regarding tattoos, and their alleged potential dangers.
“The most common misconception that I hear on a weekly basis, is that you are very likely to get a communicable disease when getting Tattooed and this is totally false, if you go to a reputable and clean studio,” said Donny who also informed me that many believe that the ink in tattoos is addicting, and that is also completely false. Okay, so it’s safe, but what about the record for the longest session? In other words, what is the lengthiest tattoo session that Donny has even done? “I once did some work on a good friend of mine for almost 19 hours,” said Donny, who did the lengthy session for the AM-JAM Motorcycle and tattoo festival in New York, where he was awarded two trophies for his work.
Aside from lengthiness and safety; what about the significance or story behind the art of tattooing? “As tattoos become more popular, they start to have less significance, and I really miss the days when only bikers and whores were getting tattoos,” said Donny who misses those days, because back then tattoos were scarier. Yet, there is more than just fright to the world of tattoos, in that Donny does charity work with his body art.
“So far we have done one benefit show for an awesome little boy named Trevor Lucas, who has an inoperable brain tumor in his brain stem,” said Donny who is currently planning a ton of different charity venues and you can check them out at: http://www.myspace.com/tat2army You can also check Donny out at: http://www.myspace.com/whosyourdonny or http://www.whosyourdonny.com and feel free to stop in and see Donny at 1012 N. Leroy Street, Fenton, Mi, 48430.
From here Donny has some recommendations as to what body parts are the hardest to get tattooed. “Ribs are probably the worst place to work on, followed by the genitals, the side of the neck, and the inner arm,” said Donny who also said that anywhere the skin is really loose is not an easy place to put a tattoo. “Before you get a tattoo, remember to think about it, and don’t just get a tattoo for the sake of getting one, because dumb tattoos can’t be covered up easily, and laser removal is expensive and painful,” said Donny.
So if you have a concept in mind or if you know what you want and it’s for the right reasons, than contact Donny and he’ll be honest and genuine with you. The main thing is that you don’t act out of impulse or stupidity when getting a tattoo, but instead have it done by a pro like Donny, who understands the right reasons and also the wrong ones.
Lights, Camera, Trevor
If you’ve been following the news here in the D, you’ve probably noticed that the world of film is surrounding us everywhere around here. It’s lights, camera, and in this case a very enjoyable interview with Trevor Carroll-Coe. Trevor is a regular on sets everywhere and has worked with many famous people in the industry. Thus, it was only fitting to hear his story, his adventures, and his thoughts about the world of film, and where he fits in with all of it.
“I have had an interest in films ever since I can remember, and my family has a long history in the industry, and I pretty much grew up on sets,” said Carroll-Coe. This would then explain his current career path and job. “I am for the most part a film-loader, and sometimes a 2nd assistant cameraman, and my job mostly consists of keeping track and caring for the film, and dealing with the cameras and all the equipment,” said Carroll-Coe who went on to say that there is enough equipment on most jobs to fill a ten ton truck. Clearly then it’s not all glitz and glam, as Trevor has some advice for those thinking about getting involved in the industry.
“A few pieces of advice I would give people looking to get into the film industry would be to be prepared to pay your dues and be willing and ready to work hard and be away from family and friends for extended periods of time,” said Carroll-Coe who also stated that there really is no easy way into the film industry. He continued on. “I interned for three movies before I got a full time paying movie gig, and sometimes we work up to 100 hours a week, and you have to be mentally prepared,” said Carroll-Coe who despite all of that, feels that the hard work is worth it. “If I ever stop enjoying what I do then I will stop doing it, but I love it,” said Carroll-Coe. Aside from the love of doing it, Trevor has worked with such individuals as: Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Hillary Swank, and Kevin Bacon, just to name a few.
Still, it was one actor that he had the opportunity to work with that was a dream come true. “My favorite actor I have ever worked with and a personal hero of mine is Clint Eastwood, and I started my career interning on his sets and have worked professionally on every one of his films since "Million Dollar Baby, and he is a true talent and an awesome person; they don't come much cooler than Clint,” said Carroll-Coe. Thus the film industry is worth getting into, and it can make dreams come true.
“The industry needs strong willed and motivated people that can work as a team and Michigan has a growing film industry and it will need a lot of people to fill the jobs and make people proud to be Michigan film workers,” said Carroll-Coe, when asked about Michigan’s current film scene.
Thus the time is now to chase your dream and make things happen in the world of film. Also, we can hopefully bring some pride back to the D as the industry of film looks to utilize our resources. The work itself may not always be pretty or easy, but if it’s your dream than you should do what Trevor Carroll-Coe is doing and go after it relentlessly.
Dreams and Visions
For many, if not all writers the idea of being published and recognized is a dream come true. Still, with so many different avenues for publishing now days, many writers are left to wonder just where they should go and what they should do. After all there is so much information out there, this can be and is a difficult decision in regards to publishing. However, one individual who has made it easier for writers to have options is Scott Hostinsky with his publication known as Near Life Publications.
“Near Life Publications is willing to work with unknown author’s at a deep discount compared to other publishing companies, we also allow our clients to sell their books and keep all of the profit,” said Hostinsky. Still, maybe you are left wondering if you have the right kind of work for this publication. “Near Life Publications is looking for any type of story teller in any type of genre,” said Hostinsky. Yet, like with anything in life there are advantages and disadvantages, so thus there was curiosity in finding out what are the advantages and disadvantages of breaking into the publishing world.
“An advantage is the ability to take your time writing, and a disadvantage is not being known well enough to be put at the top of the list when having your book reviewed,” said Hostinsky. This is very true in that from my own personal experience, I know how hard it is to break into this industry. Although, one may wonder, just why is it that an individual chooses to be a part of this business? “I know how difficult it is for anyone to get into any sort of work, and I just wanted to give a hand wherever I can, and plus I get satisfaction in knowing that I’ve helped others,” said Hostinsky.
Lastly, there has to be some advice to new or experienced writers who want to get there work out there. “Don’t give up and believe in your story, because the more you believe in your story, the more others will believe in you and your story also,” said Hostinsky. Therefore we see that the writing world is a place for creativity and imagination, and it really is a true art that takes time and effort, and it can pay off. For more information on Near Life Publications you can go to www.nearlifepublications.com and check out the great services it offers.
Until next time keep dreaming, having vision, and remember the importance of going for the gold.
