Get it all with MyMobileMafia
Let’s be real about it, and let’s face it; getting your project off the ground as an artist in the D is a HUGE challenge. You’ve got so much competition, and unless your flyers are captivating enough, many people just won’t be interested. Thus, it’s time to be smart about it; it’s time to head to the world of social media. Still, if you don’t know enough about it, or if you’re tweets aren’t just enough, then you need to turn to the experts. You need to turn to the experts at MyMobileMafia; www.mymobilemafia.com
Tiffany, who described herself as the H.B.I.C. of MyMobileMafia, filled me in on everything going on with this exciting group. “The original idea of mymobilemafia.com, was a place to blog about cell phones, cause we are both very into cell phone technology and thought that we should educate people who don’t know about it,” said Tiffany. She then continued on. “This idea turned into mymobilereports.com, which is a cell phone blog site, and that emerged because mymobilemafia.com had developed into something else, that something else was something we had been thinking about for four plus years,” said Tiffany.
MyMobileMafia also has a distinction, a rare distinction in what they can do for artists. “We stream from your venue or event to let the world see your talents and/or abilities, and we give you the domain to be who you really are; to be real,” said Tiffany. Yet, Tiffany, isn’t the only one on staff with MyMobileMafia, instead the group consists of four others. The four other members include Kofi (the CEO), Lauren (the Go-Getter), Shevy (the Frontwoman), and Blk (the Frontman).
For artists and other peeps who want to see the work of MyMobileMafia, they should head to: www.mymobilemafia.com and be sure to catch them all over the D at a variety of different shows. Also, the stars of MYMobileMafia agree with me, in that they know that artists here in the D need the exposure they deserve. “MyMobileMafia gives people what they’re asking for; a place where they can network and socialize without all the spam and snowball fights,” said Tiffany who went on to say that it’s a place where Country and Hardcore, become friends, and so much more.
MyMobileMafia also streams artists out of state, and they stream everything, by not allowing themselves to be defined by one genre or artistic group. “The concept was derived from giving people the opportunity to see the venue/party before they arrived,” said Tiffany. Therefore with a dynamic mix of respect, hustle, and exposure, the team at MyMobileMafia can and will bring you everything from artists at MoeNitty shows to those who sing with the style of Michael Bolton. They show no signs of slowing down, and if you’re ready to be exposed, to bring your best artistic talents, and to do it all while reaching a dynamically diverse audience, then go get it done, and go get it done right with MyMobileMafia: www.mymobilemafia.com
MMA: You have to see it live at the Palace
No, it’s not about promotion, and it’s not about giving you another reason to roll your eyes. Instead, what it is about is the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, and the tremendous display of athletics, and determination that took place just under two weeks ago at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan. It was a display that featured good competition, tremendous sportsmanship, and yeah lots of fists, takedowns and kicks.
The sport of Mixed Martial Arts has been covered on JPKGROOVEHOUSE before, but when you see it live as I did, you will truly know what these athletes go through as they work their way to the top in this tough, rough, and what some would call controversial sport. The Main Event Featured a Fly Weight Championship match between two ferocious females who stopped at nothing when it came to battling it out for the gold. Furthermore, there was also a submission challenge that was amazing, and the first fight ended in fourteen seconds. Through it all, the cage, the rage, and everything, the fighters showed a level of sportsmanship, courage, and integrity that is beyond respectable in this very aggressive and highly competitive sport.
Yet, shameless promotions are the exact opposite of what MMA is all about. Thus, if you have the chance to see some real MMA, be sure to check out one of the upcoming venues coming up at the Palace. It’s a real sport with real fighting; no glitz, no glam, just rugged, rough, and tough beat-downs, that will leave you thirsting for more.

Making a real difference for the inner city Youth
Coming up this Saturday, November 28, 2009, the Community Connect Consulting, Because We Care Foundation, will be hosting a fundraiser where artists can truly make their voices heard for a good cause. The funds raised will go towards programs and charitable events for the CCC, Because We Care Foundation, including a Christmas party for the youth in Southeastern Michigan communities. Yet, it goes even further than that, as artists will have the opportunity to showcase their talent and potentially win $500.
This Saturday it is going to be the “Rock the Mic Talent Showcase,” and it is going to be held at Nick’s Gas Light, which is located at 443 Grand River in Detroit, and it will be from 8PM till 2AM. There is expected to be over 20 of Detroit’s very talented artists, as well as local celebrity artists who along with the audience will determine the winner of the talent showcase. All in all, you should be sure to get there in plenty of time as a large crowd is expected for this great event.
Now, for those of you who don’t know about the CCC, Because We Care Foundation, I am pleased to give you some information from their President Adriane Mayes about their philosophy and about the impact they plan on having on the inner city youth. “The mission and overall goal of the CCC, Because We Care Foundation is to impact the community by providing services to underprivileged youth,” said Mayes. “The organization was established as an outreach to young people to provide athletic and academic enhancement through many different ways,” said Mayes, and those ways include; leadership, life, and employment skills, financial literacy, college planning, environmental awareness, conflict resolution, healthy sexuality, substance abuse awareness, and healthy living.
The CCC, Because We Care Foundation is a new organization, set up in September of this year, and they bring a lot to the table from an experience and organizational background. “I collectively have over 20 years of working with thousands of different types of youth, from all over the world,” said Mayes. She then continued on. “My partners and I collaborate with all of our different types of experiences and collectively plan to assist the youth through our Because We Care Foundation efforts,” said Mayes who along with her partners has previously conducted mentoring and tutoring to youth of all ages.
“Everyone has obstacles, and life will bring you ups and downs, but the key is to learn from everything: your past, your mistakes, and to continue to grow as a person, and help others,” said Mayes. With that said, it will be this Saturday, November 29 at Nicks Gas Light in Detroit where artists can put their talents, time, and hard efforts to good use for the youth. It’s not easy being an artist, and it’s not easy for the underprivileged youth, but together both parties can make a difference for one another through artistic expression, inspiration, and by giving hope. It is that hope that will be given this Saturday by artists, the audience, and by the CCC, Because We Care Foundation that will truly make a real difference for the youth that needs it most.
Shantinique Music Incorporated; Giving the D hope
I’ve honestly never written something like this for JPKGROOVEHOUSE, but let’s face it, it’s not every day you have that feeling of great energy, that encounter with really great people, and an overall vibe that is very necessary, especially here in Detroit. Well, long story short, that’s exactly what happened during a visit to Shantinique’s Music Store on Harper in Detroit. For CEO Barry Beal, SR, he not only executed his vision of creating a music and sportswear store in Detroit, but he did it with a look and feel that will make you believe you are truly at home; at home here in Detroit.
Aside from the selection, which was overwhelming, what stood out to me the most was the variety. It was a variety of music, movies, clothing, and much more, all of which continue to sell, even during tough economic times. Still, it’s not only the merchandise that makes Shantinque’s Music Store so great, it’s also the involvement they have with local artists. I say this because, while I was there, they were hosting an album signing for rapper JIGGSAW, a local Detroit based artist who appreciates, values, and knows the importance of being able to promote his art, and do it all at Shantinque’s Music Store, where he can reach a wide, yet local audience.
As previously mentioned, the concept behind Shantinque’s Music Store in Detroit is not about being over the top, in your face, or being unapproachable, but instead it’s about the right vibes, the right sounds, and the right looks all here in the D. The store itself is located at 8933 Harper Road, in Detroit. So if you’re looking for music and more, and if you’re looking to just come as you are, than look no further than Shantinique’s Music Store, making Detroit proud, and keeping things local.
Future Star Alert
For some people a night at the theater, enjoying some great entertainment is the perfect way to wrap up their week. The show can be a great time, and what make it great is the people who put the effort into these shows with their great acting abilities. Thus, for this piece I want to introduce to a star on the rise that is currently chasing her dream and making things happen. That star is none other than Kelli Marie Sarakun, and she’s got the scoop on her dreams, her abilities, and why she got into theater work in the first place.
“I decided to go into theater simply because I love doing it, and I was trying to imagine myself in other careers and I just couldn't, and I need to do what I love,” said Sarakun. Still, love may be one thing, but isn’t it hard to break into an industry where there is so much cut throat competition? “There are always moments when I'm worried about being able to make it in the business, but I try as much as possible to think positively, and imagine myself succeeding,” said Sarakun who knows the importance of staying optimistic and keeping a positive spirit. This may seem like common sense with anything, but with Sarakun it’s the true words of someone who has done theater for a long time. “I've been doing theater for 14 years, since I was in Kindergarten, when I played the Virgin Mary in a Christmas play,” said Sarakun who has played in roles such as Sandy in Grease, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, and Madame Thenardier in Les Miserables.
“I have also played one of the three blind mice, which was probably one of the most fun experiences I've had,” said Sarakun. Yet, what about right now, and what shows is Sarakun currently working on? “Currently, I am not in any shows, but the most recent show I did was Ragtime, in which I played the role of Emma Goldman, the famous feminist anarchist,” said Sarakun. “It was an amazing experience, and in September, I will be auditioning for several shows,” said Sarakun who can’t wait to audition. So what about the dramatics of all this? Is there really drama both on and off the stage? “In theatre, drama is everywhere-on and off the stage, and as actors we are naturally very emotional people, and competing for roles can get very dramatic, and unfortunately jealousy is very common in the business,” said Sarakun. She would then continue on.
“The challenge an actor must learn to overcome is to stop worrying about what others think and focus on himself, and it may sound selfish, but if we live in fear, nothing will ever change or work how we want it to,” said Sarakun. Lastly, if you are thinking about pursuing a career in acting, Sarakun has one simple question that you should ask yourself. “If someone is thinking about getting into theater, he/she needs to ask themselves if they really love acting,” said Sarakun who believes that you shouldn’t let the world tell you that you can’t do it, but instead you need to be the maker of your success in theater. So the stage is set, the lights are on bright, but can you perform? You can figure that out later, but for now be sure to check out more info about Kelli Marie Sarakun, and her upcoming shows, as this future star seeks to turn her dreams into a reality.
JPBTV: You need to know them
Let’s face it, it’s hard in today’s world to be an artist and showcase your talent. It’s even harder in many respects to do that in Detroit. Yet, there is hope, there is a way, and there is a media source that truly understands and represents for hip-hop artists everywhere. Of course I’m referring to JPBTV, and after getting some questions answered from their C.E.O. DaButtonpusha, all I can say is that JPBTV is the way to go for showcasing what you’ve got. However, if you’ve never heard of JPBTV, DaButtonpusha will fill you in on what it is.
“JPBTV is a media source and outlet for underground hip-hop artists world-wide,” said DaButtonpusha who also said that JPBTV’s concept is to provide a well-balanced hip-hop media outlet. “We want Emcee’s, film producers, videographers, dj’s, and a lot more,” said DaButtonpusha. Next we got into the driving force and inspiration behind JPBTV. “We want to document all the undocumented talent and to showcase as much talent from as many places as we possibly can,” said DaButtonpusha. Of course with the hip-hop and rap industry, it is hard to get the recognition you need as an artist, and JPBTV understands that. “It’s hard to get anything you need if you are not a grinder, because the first push begins with you, and too many people depend on people to give them something,” said DaButtonpusha who also feels that this type of attitude has really and truly distorted the industry.
“If more people were willing to work together, than things would be a lot easier,” said DaButtonpusha. Speaking of working together, let’s get more in depth with the artists that JPBTV works with. “We want underground hip-hop artists who have enough courage to want to take their craft full steam ahead, and we want artists whose style aims to be uplifting, and full of substance,” said DaButtonpusha who hopes that these artists and their music will help to heal the youth of this nation. Still, it must be hard to even do JPBTV during these hard economic times.
“It is very hard at times to keep it going, because the station can only survive with the viewers,” said DaButtonpusha who also mentioned that the station is doing everything it can to increase its viewership. In spite of the economy, hip-hop artists everywhere really do need to check out JPBTV for a great many reasons. JPBTV offers 24/7 video documentation through their online T.V. station, they have great connections and hook-ups to programming out of state, and they offer three community based T.V. showcases.
The list could go on into another story, but for now you should check out: www.jpbtv.com and contact DaButtonpusha, who knows how to help you represent your talent, your art, and who you are so you can get the exposure that you need. Thus, if you’re still sitting around waiting for something to happen, than you should think again and get the difference you want and need with JPBTV.
The Wrong fight to pick
Oh yeah, get ready as we will now revisit the exciting world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Furthermore, we will do so with a twist. It was after speaking to Bill Zanetti, a six year MMA fighter, that I learned the reality about the show “Bully Beat-Down,” and just what could and does happen if a bully doesn’t learn who they should and should not pick a fight with. Clearly, common sense would tell me that most bullies wouldn’t want to pick a fight with an MMA fighter, but what happens if they do? “An MMA fighter can and does do what’s on the show, and they can do a whole lot more,” said Zanetti who went on to say that if you took the headgear off the bully and had them fight an MMA rules match, that the fight itself may last 30 seconds, if that, and the bully would either submit or be knocked out.
Still, since the majority if not all of the bullies on the show are men, the question that remains is: what are these bullies thinking? “From past experience guys always think they are tougher than they really are, and they all watch UFC and think they can do it because one day at the bar they beat someone up, but people really don’t understand the ground game, and the quickly realize it’s a lot harder than it looks,” said Zanetti. Although, what about an individuals build; doesn’t that help?
“A person’s build really doesn’t matter, because there is a fighting style for every build,” said Zanetti who went on to say that you just have to find the style that works best for you. Yet, the training itself must be hard. “The training can be very intense but it depends on what you want to do,” said Zanetti, who also stated that if you want to train to be a fighter, that you will be pushed towards a breaking point. Finally, there was some helpful advice for bullies everywhere. “Don’t try and fight MMA fighters, because you will get hurt,” said Zanetti.
Thus, it is important to remember that what may look easy is definitely not, and bullies everywhere should be careful. Furthermore, after seeing some of the training these guys do, I would highly recommend that bullies everywhere reconsider their options. Also, for those who look to train of give MMA a shot, remember it doesn’t matter what type of body you have, but what does matter is the effort you are willing to put into your training and the willingness you have to never give up.
Getting inked and doing it right
Okay, so maybe you’re a total rebel, or you want something that means something to you, or worse case scenario; you drank too much and did it on a dare. Well, hopefully it’s not the last one of those options, but if you are thinking about getting a tattoo, then you should definitely go with a professional, and a real artist. The real artist I am referring to is Donny of whosyourdonny? Tattoo located in Fenton, MI. Donny has some words of wisdom, an impressive knowledge base and background, and an understanding of the body that many other tattoo artists may not. There are many misconceptions regarding tattoos, and their alleged potential dangers.
“The most common misconception that I hear on a weekly basis, is that you are very likely to get a communicable disease when getting Tattooed and this is totally false, if you go to a reputable and clean studio,” said Donny who also informed me that many believe that the ink in tattoos is addicting, and that is also completely false. Okay, so it’s safe, but what about the record for the longest session? In other words, what is the lengthiest tattoo session that Donny has even done? “I once did some work on a good friend of mine for almost 19 hours,” said Donny, who did the lengthy session for the AM-JAM Motorcycle and tattoo festival in New York, where he was awarded two trophies for his work.
Aside from lengthiness and safety; what about the significance or story behind the art of tattooing? “As tattoos become more popular, they start to have less significance, and I really miss the days when only bikers and whores were getting tattoos,” said Donny who misses those days, because back then tattoos were scarier. Yet, there is more than just fright to the world of tattoos, in that Donny does charity work with his body art.
“So far we have done one benefit show for an awesome little boy named Trevor Lucas, who has an inoperable brain tumor in his brain stem,” said Donny who is currently planning a ton of different charity venues and you can check them out at: http://www.myspace.com/tat2army You can also check Donny out at: http://www.myspace.com/whosyourdonny or http://www.whosyourdonny.com and feel free to stop in and see Donny at 1012 N. Leroy Street, Fenton, Mi, 48430.
From here Donny has some recommendations as to what body parts are the hardest to get tattooed. “Ribs are probably the worst place to work on, followed by the genitals, the side of the neck, and the inner arm,” said Donny who also said that anywhere the skin is really loose is not an easy place to put a tattoo. “Before you get a tattoo, remember to think about it, and don’t just get a tattoo for the sake of getting one, because dumb tattoos can’t be covered up easily, and laser removal is expensive and painful,” said Donny.
So if you have a concept in mind or if you know what you want and it’s for the right reasons, than contact Donny and he’ll be honest and genuine with you. The main thing is that you don’t act out of impulse or stupidity when getting a tattoo, but instead have it done by a pro like Donny, who understands the right reasons and also the wrong ones.
Lights, Camera, Trevor
If you’ve been following the news here in the D, you’ve probably noticed that the world of film is surrounding us everywhere around here. It’s lights, camera, and in this case a very enjoyable interview with Trevor Carroll-Coe. Trevor is a regular on sets everywhere and has worked with many famous people in the industry. Thus, it was only fitting to hear his story, his adventures, and his thoughts about the world of film, and where he fits in with all of it.
“I have had an interest in films ever since I can remember, and my family has a long history in the industry, and I pretty much grew up on sets,” said Carroll-Coe. This would then explain his current career path and job. “I am for the most part a film-loader, and sometimes a 2nd assistant cameraman, and my job mostly consists of keeping track and caring for the film, and dealing with the cameras and all the equipment,” said Carroll-Coe who went on to say that there is enough equipment on most jobs to fill a ten ton truck. Clearly then it’s not all glitz and glam, as Trevor has some advice for those thinking about getting involved in the industry.
“A few pieces of advice I would give people looking to get into the film industry would be to be prepared to pay your dues and be willing and ready to work hard and be away from family and friends for extended periods of time,” said Carroll-Coe who also stated that there really is no easy way into the film industry. He continued on. “I interned for three movies before I got a full time paying movie gig, and sometimes we work up to 100 hours a week, and you have to be mentally prepared,” said Carroll-Coe who despite all of that, feels that the hard work is worth it. “If I ever stop enjoying what I do then I will stop doing it, but I love it,” said Carroll-Coe. Aside from the love of doing it, Trevor has worked with such individuals as: Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Hillary Swank, and Kevin Bacon, just to name a few.
Still, it was one actor that he had the opportunity to work with that was a dream come true. “My favorite actor I have ever worked with and a personal hero of mine is Clint Eastwood, and I started my career interning on his sets and have worked professionally on every one of his films since "Million Dollar Baby, and he is a true talent and an awesome person; they don't come much cooler than Clint,” said Carroll-Coe. Thus the film industry is worth getting into, and it can make dreams come true.
“The industry needs strong willed and motivated people that can work as a team and Michigan has a growing film industry and it will need a lot of people to fill the jobs and make people proud to be Michigan film workers,” said Carroll-Coe, when asked about Michigan’s current film scene.
Thus the time is now to chase your dream and make things happen in the world of film. Also, we can hopefully bring some pride back to the D as the industry of film looks to utilize our resources. The work itself may not always be pretty or easy, but if it’s your dream than you should do what Trevor Carroll-Coe is doing and go after it relentlessly.
Dreams and Visions
For many, if not all writers the idea of being published and recognized is a dream come true. Still, with so many different avenues for publishing now days, many writers are left to wonder just where they should go and what they should do. After all there is so much information out there, this can be and is a difficult decision in regards to publishing. However, one individual who has made it easier for writers to have options is Scott Hostinsky with his publication known as Near Life Publications.
“Near Life Publications is willing to work with unknown author’s at a deep discount compared to other publishing companies, we also allow our clients to sell their books and keep all of the profit,” said Hostinsky. Still, maybe you are left wondering if you have the right kind of work for this publication. “Near Life Publications is looking for any type of story teller in any type of genre,” said Hostinsky. Yet, like with anything in life there are advantages and disadvantages, so thus there was curiosity in finding out what are the advantages and disadvantages of breaking into the publishing world.
“An advantage is the ability to take your time writing, and a disadvantage is not being known well enough to be put at the top of the list when having your book reviewed,” said Hostinsky. This is very true in that from my own personal experience, I know how hard it is to break into this industry. Although, one may wonder, just why is it that an individual chooses to be a part of this business? “I know how difficult it is for anyone to get into any sort of work, and I just wanted to give a hand wherever I can, and plus I get satisfaction in knowing that I’ve helped others,” said Hostinsky.
Lastly, there has to be some advice to new or experienced writers who want to get there work out there. “Don’t give up and believe in your story, because the more you believe in your story, the more others will believe in you and your story also,” said Hostinsky. Therefore we see that the writing world is a place for creativity and imagination, and it really is a true art that takes time and effort, and it can pay off. For more information on Near Life Publications you can go to www.nearlifepublications.com and check out the great services it offers.
Until next time keep dreaming, having vision, and remember the importance of going for the gold.
